SORCERER: The Crowning Of The Fire King

After an amazing return to the scène with ‘In The Shadow Of The Inverted Cross’, Swedish Sorcerer consolidates its position in the doom metal scène with the even more brilliant ‘The Crowning Of The Fire King’. Johnny Hagel on bass, Kristian Niemann and Peter Hallgren on guitars… they are all familiar with grand successes, respectively in Tiamat, Therion and Rob Rock. Yet here they have chosen the path of epic traditional doom metal, together with vocalist Anders Engberg and the returning prodigal son Richard Evensand on drums (but the album includes drums of session musician Lars Sköld). And they do that with verve! The way how Sorcerer manages to blend well-known ingredients into a magic potion which goes straight to your heart, is nothing but sublime!
Everything is fantastic on this album. Poetic lyrics that are brought to a higher level by vocalist supreme Engberg, howling emotive guitar solos during introvert passages, fervent neo-classical playing when things get wilder and all this is served on a ponderous foundation of monumental riffs. This is truly a wet dream for fans of Candlemass and Black Sabbath with Dio/Tony Martin. In despite of the rather slow character of the lengthy songs, they are really catchy from time to time. Just listen to ‘Abandoned By The Gods’ or the harmony vocals in the chorus of ‘Crimson Cross’. Diabolical choirs make the captivating ‘The Devil’s Incubus’ a real feast. And what can we say about the summit of grief, realized in the superior occluding track ‘Unbearable Sorrow’? Pure bliss! Add the emotive guitar parts of Hallgren and Niemann to this (think of the style from Marcus Jidell – Avatarium), and you have the soundtrack for this fall and winter within reach. A must have for every doom metal fan!

Na een beresterke doorstart met ‘In The Shadow Of The Inverted Cross’ consolideert het Zweedse Sorcerer haar positie in de doom metalscène met het nog briljantere ‘The Crowning Of The Fire King’. Johnny Hagel op bas, Kristian Niemann en Peter Hallgren op gitaar… ze hebben allen al grote successen gekend met respectievelijk Tiamat, Therion en Rob Rock, maar hier gaan ze – samen met zanger Anders Engberg en de teruggekeerde drummer Richard Evensand (op het album hoor je sessiedrummer Lars Sköld) – het pad op van epische traditionele doom metal. En dat doen ze met verve! Wat zeggen we? Hoe Sorcerer met overbekende ingrediënten een verheven cocktail brouwt die recht naar het hart gaat, dat is zondermeer subliem!
Alles klopt aan dit album. Poëtische teksten die door wereldzanger Engberg naar een hoger niveau gestuwd worden, huilende gitaarsolo’s tijdens introverte passages, vurig neoklassiek spel wanneer het wat vinniger wordt en dit alles op een loodzware basis van monumentale riffs. Dit is de natte droom van fans van Candlemass en Black Sabbath met Dio/Tony Martin. Ondanks het slepende karakter van de lange songs, komen ze ook bij momenten erg catchy over. Luister maar naar ‘Abandoned By The Gods’ of de samenzang in het refrein van ‘Crimson Cross’. Diabolische koorzang maakt van het beklijvende ‘The Devil’s Incubus’ een waar festijn. En wat kunnen we zeggen over het toppunt van smart dat gestalte krijgt in de superieure afsluiter ‘Unbearable Sorrow’? Genieten maar! Voeg daar de emotionele gitaarpartijen van Hallgren en Niemann aan toe (denk aan de stijl van Marcus Jidell – Avatarium) en je hebt de soundtrack voor de herfst binnen handbereik. Verplichte kost voor elke doom metalfan!
