MASTERS OF DISGUISE: Alpha Omega

This German band keeps the US speed metal heritage of the eighties alive, especially the one of the band Savage Grace. Thus, they found inspiration in the song ‘Master Of Disguise’ from aforementioned band, when looking for their own moniker. After ‘Back With A Vengeance’ (2013) and ‘The Savage And The Grace’ (2015), this is their third album.
After a slow intro, ‘Sacrifice’ bursts loose, like a stallion held in a stable for too long, with galloping drums, only the break with some spoken word and guitar solo slows down. The start of ‘Demons’ contains some original drum patterns and then rushes forward at neck breaking speed passing an acoustic/medieval passage. ‘Death’ begins ambient and quiet with Alex showing he has a normal singing voice at his disposal and grows towards an epic song. ‘Redemption’ is pure speed with some though backing vocals and a soaring solo bringing some variation, after which ‘Cross’ sounds slower and epic, with the mighty voice of Alex, again. The great epic title track is speed with catchy hooks, some extra low grunt like vocals, a dark brooding break and a sprint towards the finale. Then follows ‘Witchhammer’, with Alex in shriek modus and great melodic guitar stuff. A song about the helmeted cop Knutson (the one on the cover of Savafe Graces’s debut album) is mandatory. A raging ‘Leech’ closes, unless you got the version with a bonus track, where ‘Blackwitch’ (cover of the Canadian Exciter) is found, slow, heavy and ominous.
Simply great material with a fresh angle on eighties speed!

Deze Duitse band houdt de speed metal erfenis van de tachtiger jaren levend, meer bepaald die van de band Savage Grace. Zo vonden ze inspiratie in de song ‘Master of Disguise’ van voornoemde band, wanneer ze hun eigen bandnaam zochten. Na ‘Back With A vengeance’ (2013) en ‘The Savage And The Grace’ (2015) is dit hun derde album.
Na een trage intro, barst ‘Sacrifice’ los, als een hengst die te lang op stal gestaan heeft, met galopperende drums, enkel de break met wat ‘spoken word’ en gitaarsolo brengt wat soelaas. Het begin van ‘Demons’ bevat originele drumpatronen en dan snelt het vooruit met nek brekende snelheid langs een akoestisch/middeleeuwse passage. ‘Death’ begint sfeervol en rustig met Alex die bewijst ook over een normale zangstem te beschikken en groeit uit tot een episch nummer. ‘Redemption’ is pure speed met enkel wat stoere backing vocals en een gierende solo die voor wat variatie zorgen, waarna ‘Cross’ weer trager en epischer, met de machtige stem van Alex, klinkt. Het grootse epische titelnummer is speed met catchy hooks, wat extra lage bijna grunt stem, een donker broedende break en een sprint naar de finale. Daarna komt ‘Witchhammer’, met Alex in schreeuw modus en prima melodieus gitaarwerk. Een nummer over de gehelmde ‘cop’ Knutsson (op de hoes van Savage Grace’s debuut album) mocht niet ontbreken. Een razend ‘Leech’ sluit af, tenzij men de versie met bonus track heeft, waar men ‘Blackwitch’ (cover van het Canadese Exciter) traag, zwaar en dreigend terugvindt.
Prima schijf met moderne kijk op eighties speed!
