ANTLERS: Beneath.Below.Behold

Antlers happens to be a four piece band hailing from Leipzig, Germany and they really intrigue us with their sophomore album ‘Beneath.Below.Behold’. Earlier they presented their signature self-willed approach of atmospheric black metal on debut album ‘A Gaze Into The Abyss’ (2015).
This is an album brimming with passion and fury. Many things happen within the songs, but there is always a noticeable emotive catharsis. The foundation is black metal, that’s obvious, with shrill, fluttering guitar sounds as trademark, so that the eleven minutes long opening track ‘Theom’ recalls a bit the oppressive density of Der Weg Einer Freiheit. Vocals of Ntx sound different: raucous and even a bit kind of laborious, but not really blackened screams. Yet it suits this harsh metal, while the emotive performance reminds me a bit of Johan Edlund of Tiamat now and then, that hoarseness you know... After an opulence of epic leads in the opener and mainly mid-paced with compelling guitars, ‘Heal’ cuts loose with scorching speed. Later in that song we hear clean vocals for the first time and we will find out that they are mostly solemn and trance-inducing. Three shorter instrumental songs give us moments of reflection. ‘Nengures’ with classic acoustic guitar and violin of guest musician G. Börner, ‘Drowned In A Well’ happens to be a piano interlude and ‘Lug’s Waters’ occludes this captivating album. The adventurous character of the music is best illustrated during the magnificent ‘Metempsychosis’ where melancholy reigns in clean chants and they even show a kind of infectious flavour in the tight rocking parts. Most desperate feelings we can hear in ‘The Tide’, with ultimate deep-draught vocals and merciless black metal. Antlers manages to present a special approach of black metal and they do it well on this engrossing release! Excellent album!

Antlers is een vierkoppige band uit Duitsland, Leipzig dat ons bijzonder intrigeert met een tweede album ‘Beneath.Below.Behold’. Eerder lieten ze ons al kennismaken met hun eigenzinnige aanpak van atmosferische zwartgeblakerde metal op debuutalbum ‘A Gaze Into The Abyss’ (2015).
Dit is een album dat passie en begeestering uitstraalt. Er gebeurt heel wat in de songs, maar een emotionele catharsis is merkbaar. De basis is overduidelijk black metal, met het schelle, uitzwermende gitaargeluid als handelsmerk, zodat de elf minuten durende opener ‘Theom’ de bedrukkende densiteit van Der Weg Einer Freiheit oproept. De zang van Ntx klinkt rauw, zelfs ietwat moeizaam en valt niet echt als black te categoriseren. Ze past wel perfect in deze extreme hap muziek, waarbij de emotionele performance me soms wat aan Johan Edlund van Tiamat herinnert. Na heel wat epische leads in de opener en grotendeels mediumtempo met slepende gitaren, steekt ‘Heal’ een tandje bij met verschroeiende snelheden. Hier passeert ook voor het eerste cleane zang de revue en het zal blijken dat die meestal plechtig en tranceopwekkend zal zijn. Drie kortere instrumentale songs bieden ons momenten van reflectie. ‘Nengures’ met klassieke akoestische gitaar en vioolspel van gastmuzikant G. Börner, ‘Drowned In A Well’ is een piano intermezzo en ‘Lug’s Waters’ sluit dit aangrijpende album af. Het avontuurlijke karakter van de muziek wordt het best geïllustreerd tijdens het prachtige ‘Metempsychosis’ waarin weemoed opduikt in de cleane zang en men zelfs een zekere aanstekelijkheid tijdens de strak rockende stukken vertoont. Meest wanhopige passages horen we dan weer in ‘The Tide’, met uitermate diepgaande zang en meedogenloze black metal. Antlers heeft een aparte benadering van black metal heel geslaagd toegepast op dit boeiende album. Puik werk!
