MALACODA: Ritualis Aeterna (MCD)

As teaser for upcoming heaviness, Canadian Malacoda releases the EP ‘Ritualis Aeterna’. Like the band name suggests, the guys are above all inspired by Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’ with obviously a preference for hell and fallen angels. Keyboard virtuoso Jonah Weingarten (Pyramaze) has recently joined the band and the six songs, which lift up a tip of the veil, guide us through a meritorious amalgamation of horror tinged gothic metal with symphonic arrangements and tight power metal. Sometimes it is a bit hectic in a smooth Italian manner, but a moment of tranquillity such as ‘Linger Here’ brings everything in balance again. We are on the tiptoe of expectations about what the future will bring for this Canadian collective.

Als smaakmaker voor aankomend geweld brengt het Canadese Malacoda de ep ‘Ritualis Aeterna’ op de markt. Zoals de bandnaam aangeeft, zijn de heren vooral geïnspireerd door Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’ met uiteraard een voorliefde voor de hel en gevallen engelen. Toetsenvirtuoos Jonah Weingarten (Pyramaze) is recentelijk toegetreden tot de band en de zes songs die een tip van de sluier oplichten maken ons wegwijs in een verdienstelijk amalgaam van horror gerichte gotische metal met symfonische arrangementen en strakke power metal. Soms is het wat druk naar Italiaans model, maar een rustpunt als ‘Linger Here’ brengt dat weer helemaal in evenwicht. We zijn benieuwd wat de toekomst brengt voor dit Canadese gezelschap.
