WE SELL THE DEAD: Heaven Doesn't Want You And Hell Is Full

Above all, we know Niclas Engelin as smooth functioning second guitarist in the successful In Flames, but the man has supplementary talents. Now very interesting band has come into being in Sweden, with him at the helm. We Sell The Dead also includes vocalist Apollo Papathanasio (ex-Firewind, Spiritual Beggars), ex-HIM drummer Gas Lipstick and Drömriket’s Jonas Slättung. This results in an extremely refreshing album with epic doom metal as starting point, but due to their eclectic bond with all kinds of metal, it goes really beyond genres.
Although we always approach so called ‘super bands’ with objectivity and a bit reserved, this one instantly gives us a ‘wow’ feel. Why? Well, when we look through the Jack The Ripper marketing, we hear an ultimate genuine and captivating album, which has its first highlight with the epic doom grandness in ‘Echoes Of An Ugly Past’. The solemn keyboards as well as the sonorous guitar sounds and the vocals are exceptional. Do we hear a cowboy melody in ‘Leave Me Alone’? It is a fact that it is a shot in a bull’s eye with its marshy guitars and doom-laden swing (yes, that exists!). But that is also tenable for ‘Imagine’, which has the nearest approach to In Flames by its catchiness and another stunner is ‘Turn It Over’, shifting between low-ranged (Jonas) and well-known clean (Apollo) chants. Fans of Spiritual Beggars will also find many things they like on this album. After the beautiful, sensitive ‘Too Cold To Touch’, we have in ‘Trust’ any reminiscence with My Dying Bride. On the other hand is ‘Pale And Perfect’ rather catchy and light, while occluding track ‘Silent Scream’ charms us with bluesy guitar skills which remind us of Pink Floyd. A peaceful feeling in this track. This is a mighty record we listened to a lot of times this month! Can’t get enough!

Niclas Engelin kennen we vooral als vlotjes functionerende tweede gitarist in het succesvolle In Flames, maar de man heeft nog meer in zijn mars. Er is in Zweden een bijzonder interessante band opgestaan met hem als initiatiefnemer. We Sell The Dead herbergt namelijk ook zanger Apollo Papathanasio (ex-Firewind, Spiritual Beggars), ex-HIM drummer Gas Lipstick en Drömriket’s Jonas Slättung. Dit resulteert in een bijzonder verfrissend album met epische doom metal als uitgangspunt, maar door de eclectische betrokkenheid bij metal in het algemeen etaleert dit een brede spanwijdte.
Hoewel we superbands altijd met een korrel zout nemen en objectief benaderen, brengt deze meteen een ‘wow’ gevoel teweeg. Waarom? Wel, kijken we even door de Jack The Ripper marketing heen, dan horen we een bijzonder integer en aangrijpend album, dat pas goed van start gaat met epische doomgrandeur in ‘Echoes Of An Ugly Past’. Zowel de plechtige keyboards als heldere gitaarklanken als de zang zijn uitzonderlijk. Horen we daar een cowboymelodie in ‘Leave Me Alone’? Feit is dat dit met zijn drassige gitaren en doomy swing (ja, het bestaat!) meteen een schot in de roos is. Maar dat geldt ook voor ‘Imagine’ dat nog het dichtst aanschurkt bij de vlotheid van In Flames en het door afwisselend lage (Jonas) en welbekende (Apollo) zang opgesmukte ‘Turn It Over’. Fans van Spiritual Beggars zullen op dit album ook hun gading vinden. Na het mooie, sensitieve ‘Too Cold To Touch’ vertoont ‘Trust’ een welgesmaakte vergelijking met My Dying Bride. ‘Pale And Perfect’ is dan weer vlot en beperkt licht, terwijl afsluiter ‘Silent Scream’ beklijft met bluesy gitaarwerk dat ons aan Pink Floyd doet denken. Vredig ook. Een machtige plaat die we deze maand grijs gedraaid hebben!
