ANCST: Ghosts Of The Timeless Void

In the past the German band Ancst released a considerable amount of EP’s and split CD’s (recently one with King Of Apathy for instance), but ‘Ghosts Of The Timeless Void’ is – following their debut ‘Moloch’ (2006) - only the second full length disc with new material. The band plays a hybrid of black/death with hardcore vocals. Thus it is with raging fury that songs like ‘Dying Embers’, the ultra tight ‘Shackles Of Decency’ and ‘Concrete Veins’ are fired off at us. Unfortunately the hoarse and forced vocals are getting a bit monotonous after few songs.
We are mainly charmed by the sonorous guitar skills, along the lines of proper Swedish steel. Musically black metal fans will probably like it, but vocal-wise I have my doubts. Towards the end the band slackens down pace, with nice solos in the slower ‘Republic Of Hatred’, a surprising sidestep to atmospheric darkness in the semi-spoken ‘Dysthymia’ and a melodic mid-part in ‘Sanctity’. When the band will insert more variegation – as in the last songs – then it gets more interesting. For now this happens to be a modern metal band which blends all kinds of styles.

De voorgeschiedenis van het Duitse Ancst toont ons een aanzienlijk aantal ep’s en split cd’s (recentelijk nog met King Of Apathy), maar ‘Ghosts Of The Timeless Void’ is na ‘Moloch’ (2006) pas het tweede volledig album met nieuw werk. De band speelt een hybride van black/death metal met hardcore zang. Het is dan ook met dampende furie dat songs als ‘Dying Embers’, het strakke ‘Shackles Of Decency’ en ‘Concrete Veins’ op ons afgevuurd worden.
Helaas gaat de schorre zang al vlug een tikkeltje eentonig klinken en zijn we vooral gecharmeerd van het heldere gitaarwerk dat meermaals op Zweedse leest geschoeid is. Muzikaal zullen black metalfans aan hun trekken komen, vocaal is een ander paar mouwen. Naar het einde toe gaat het tempo omlaag, met knappe solo’s in het slepende ‘Republic Of Hatred’, een verrassend uitstapje naar atmosferische duisternis in het halfgesproken ‘Dysthymia’ en een melodieus middenstuk in ‘Sanctitv’. Wanneer de band, zoals hier, wat meer variatie inbouwt, wordt het meteen een pak interessanter. Moderne metalband die van meerdere walletjes eet.
