THOBBE ENGLUND: The Draining Of Vergelmer

This is already the fourth solo album of Thobbe Englund, but since he left Sabaton in July 2016 and released ‘Sold My Soul’, it resulted in more publicity. With his own band he has total freedom and he avails himself of this opportunity. ‘The Draining Of Vergelmer’ returns to Scandinavian mythological themes he had not been touching for a while and musically this happens to be an album on which the sympathetic ex-Sabaton guitarist excels as virtuoso guitarist.
It results in an album full of variegation, showing different sides from Englund’s talents. As singer he is rather mediocre, but as guitarist he does leave us in awe. Just listen to the instrumental ‘Odin’s Hall’. It is obvious that Englund was born and raised with guitarists as Yngwie Malmsteen and he illustrates that by covering ‘I Am A Viking’, a track on which he got some vocal help from Sabaton’s Joakim Brodén and Patrik J. Selleby (Bloodbound). Quite a weird sidekick is ‘Viking’, it has the nearest approach to Rammstein, with guest vocals of Raubtier’s Pär Hulkoff. Anyways, strong tracks like ‘Illuminati’ and ‘Aim And Fire’ (fervent soloing!) prove that Thobbe will find his way in the current power metal scène.

Dit is reeds het vierde soloalbum van Thobbe Englund, maar sinds hij in juli 2016 Sabaton verliet en ‘Sold My Soul’ uitbracht, wordt er uiteraard meer ruchtbaarheid aan gegeven. Met zijn eigen band heeft hij totale vrijheid en die benut deze dan ook ten volle. ‘The Draining Of Vergelmer’ keert terug naar Scandinavische mythologische thema’s die hij een poos niet meer aangeraakt had en muzikaal is dit een album waarop de sympathieke ex-Sabaton gitarist zich ten voeten uit profileert als stergitarist.
Het resulteert in een gevarieerd album dat verscheidene kanten van Englund’s talent laat zien. Als zanger ontstijgt hij de middelmaat niet, maar als gitarist weet hij ons wel te verbluffen, luister maar naar het instrumentale ‘Odin’s Hall’. Dat Englund geboren en getogen is met gitaristen als Yngwie Malmsteen, wordt trouwens ook geïllustreerd in de cover van deze laatste ‘I Am A Viking’ waarbij hij vocale hulp inroept van Sabaton’s Joakim Brodén en Patrik J. Selleby (Bloodbound). Een vreemd uitstapje is ‘Viking’, eerder Rammstein met gastvocalen van Raubtier’s Pär Hulkoff. Sterke tracks als ‘Illuminati’ en het van klaterende solo’s voorziene ‘Aim And Fire’ bewijzen echter dan Thobbe zijn weg wel zal vinden in de huidige power metal scène.
