AEONIAN SORROW: Into The Eternity A Moment We Are

Our first encounter with Greek female artist Gogo Melone took place when she added any female vocals to the song ‘In This Empty Room’ of international doom metal outfit Clouds. Yet she also has a band in which she happens to be the initiator and leading lady, called Aeonian Sorrow. In addition to her sonorous voice and piano playing, the rest of the band exists of mostly Finnish musicians. As fan of the genre, Gogo has created a recognizable yet very deep-draught album, brimming with pain and grief. During ‘Forever Misery’ we think of Saturnus and Draconian, also due to the fact that male growler Alejandro Lotero appears to have a juicy rolling grunt and on the other side of the spectrum we have these female chants, being serene, dreamy and lovely.
The slow and long compositions crawl through immense darkness, relished with introvert piano interludes, soaring synths and graceful guitar leads. A signature addition to this classic doom/death metal characteristics, one can find in the ethnic tinged, ethereal vocal parts that have major intensity. In ‘Under The Light’ they are just a little bit more fervent than in the other songs. ‘Thanatos Kyrie’ digs deep, like wallowing into a kind of nihilism with no way out. You notice that this album has been crafted by someone with a heart for the doom genre. All ingredients we like are present, with as extra the refined female touch of Melone.

Onze eerste kennismaking met de Griekse artieste Gogo Melone vond plaats toen ze ‘In This Empty Room’ van doom metalband Clouds van vrouwelijke vocalen voorzag. Nu heeft ze een eigen band Aeonian Sorrow, bestaande uit meestal Finse muzikanten, plus haar zuivere stem en pianospel. Als fan van het genre heeft Gogo een herkenbaar edoch diepgravend album gecreëerd, waar pijn en smart van afdruipt. Tijdens ‘Forever Misery’ denken we aan Saturnus en Draconian, ook al omdat mannelijke brulboei Alejandro Lotero een sappige rollende grunt heeft en daar tegenover de vrouwelijke zang sereen, dromerig en lieflijk is.
De trage en lange composities slepen zich doorheen de duisternis met introverte piano interludia, zwevende synths en sierlijke gitaar leads. Een persoonlijke toevoeging aan deze klassieke doom/death metal composities vinden we in de etnisch aandoende, etherische zangpartijen welke een grote mate van intensiteit vertonen. In ‘Under The Light’ zijn deze dan weer wat vinniger dan in de andere songs. ‘Thanatos Kyrie’ gaat diep, met wentelen in een soort nihilisme waaruit geen weg terug is. Je merkt dat dit album door een fan van het genre gemaakt is. Alle gewenste ingrediënten zijn aanwezig met als extra de vrouwelijke verfijnde toets van Melone.
