INGLORIOUS: Ride To Nowhere

Inglorious got rave reviews for their first two albums. In Classic Rock magazine they were even praised as being ‘the future of British rock’. Well, we know all about the chauvinistic approach of English press, but in this case we have to admit that the band around singer Nathan Jones and guitarists Eriksson and Lowe has an extremely fresh and energetic approach of those idiosyncratic seventies vibrations in hard rock.
With a voice like the one from Nathan James we are sure that the catchy songs are coloured in a very soulful manner. His sensitive timbre in opening track ‘Where Are You Now’ happens to be in fine contrast with the fervent rocking guitars. It surely is a compliment to be compared with David Coverdale, that’s Nathan’s main hero. The chunky guitars in ‘Freak Show’, a calmer approach in ‘Never Alone’, or the fluttering guitars with juicy vocals in ‘Tomorrow’, Nathan does it all the way with verve, regaled with majestic guitar skills. The songs are regularly relished with any backing vocal choirs from the guys and the latter part of this album even digs deeper into emotional bliss. ‘I Don’t Know You’ appears to be a real stunner with blues-like ornaments and howling, emotive guitar solo. It has the nearest approach to Deep Purple in the smooth rocking ‘While She Sleeps’ and Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath play poker on the table of an immortal hardrock café in the magnificent ‘Ride To Nowhere’ which also haunts you with an atmospheric fragment. Really beautiful! Same goes for the moving ballad ‘Glory Days’, drenched in nostalgia with an amazing vocal performance of Nathan. This third album shows a maturity we really like and it puts Inglorious in our list of established bands.

Inglorious heeft behoorlijk wat lof geoogst met de twee eerste albums. In Classic Rock magazine werden ze zelfs bejubeld als zijnde “the future of British rockâ€. We zijn vertrouwd met het chauvinisme van de Engelse pers, maar in dit geval mogen we toch stellen dat de band rond zanger Nathan James en gitaristen Eriksson en Lowe een bijzonder frisse en energieke aanpak heeft van die typische jaren 70 vibratie van hard rock.
Met een stem als deze van Nathan James zit je gebeiteld om de toegankelijke songs heel soulvol in te kleuren. Zijn gevoelig timbre in opener ‘Where Are You Now’ staat haaks op de vurig rockende gitaren. Het is niet mis om vergeleken te worden met David Coverdale en dat is dan ook zijn grote voorbeeld. De vette gitaren in ‘Freak Show’, een sensitievere aanpak in het kalmere ‘Never Alone’, of de uitwaaierende gitaren met smeuïge zang in ‘Tomorrow’, het gaat Nathan allemaal goed af, ondersteund door excellent gitaarwerk. De songs worden meermaals voorzien van enige achtergrondzang en het tweede deel van dit album graaft dieper. ‘I Don’t Know You’ is zo’n voltreffer met bluesy aanpak en huilende gitaarsolo. Deep Purple is niet veraf in het rockende ‘While She Sleeps’ en Led Zeppelin en Black Sabbath spelen poker op de tafel van het onsterfelijke hardrockcafé in het prachtige ‘Ride To Nowhere’ dat ook nog beklijft met een atmosferische passage. Heel mooi! Net zoals de aangrijpende ballade ‘Glory Days’, gedrenkt in nostalgie met een fantastische zangprestatie van Nathan. Dit derde album vertoont een maturiteit die we graag smaken en plaatst Inglorious op onze lijst van blijvers.
