LEMURIA: The Hysterical Hunt

Lemuria was on hold for quite a while, but now they present their third album ‘The Hysterical Hunt’ with a new line-up. In 2010 their previous album ‘Chanson De La Croisade’ came out and from that line-up only the rhythm section – and sole original members since 2001 - Vincent Pichal (drums, keyboards, orchestration) and bassist Bart De Prins are leftovers.
The Belgian symphonic black metal band did not do their work by halves. The concept album takes you back into time to France in the 18th century, when the region of Gévaudan was terrorized by a wolf-like monster bringing death and despair. Lemuria has crystallized its already challenging sound to the utmost, so that it seems as if you are listening to an ominous and mystical performance on a bed of Spartan metal. They manage to do that in a magnificent way; mostly in lengthy compositions in which a lot of things are happening. Yet the entire thing sounds melodious and rather accessible. Strong melodies, fervent guitar skills and epic interludes are the foundation of their music; that’s why the story – even with actor Herbert Flack as narrator – seems to take place in your living room. New vocalist Daan Swinnen does an amazing job and proves himself in blackened grimness as well as with low-ranged growls. In some of the songs female vocals add a flavour of mystical serenity, while the orchestral arrangements are done to a turn.
Recommended tracks to get in the mood are ‘A Plague Upon The Land’, the compelling ‘Between Man And Wolf’ (of which the melody returns in the bonus track) and the extensive epics ‘A Secret Life’ and ‘Endgame’. The latter one demands full attention before the epilogue occludes this listening session. A tempestuous comeback with brilliant artwork from Kris Verwimp in a modern, yet dynamic production.

Lemuria stond een hele poos op non-actief, maar presenteert zich op het derde album ‘The Hysterical Hunt’ in een nieuwe bezetting. Het is dan ook al sinds 2010 geleden dat vorig album ‘Chanson De La Croisade’ uitkwam en van die bezetting blijft alleen de ritmesectie – en enige originele leden sinds 2001 – Vincent Pichal (drums, keyboards, orkestratie) en bassist Bart De Prins over.
De Belgische symfonische black metalband heeft geen half werk geleverd. Het conceptalbum neemt je mee naar het Frankrijk uit de 18e eeuw, waar de streek van Gévaudan geterroriseerd werd door een wolfachtig monster dat dood en verderf bracht. Lemuria heeft zijn al best uitdagende sound nog meer uitgekristalliseerd, zodat je naar een dreigend en mystiek hoorspel op een bedje van Spartaanse metal lijkt te luisteren. Dat brengen ze voortreffelijk, in veelal lange composities waarin veel gebeurd. Toch klinkt het geheel melodieus en vrij toegankelijk. Sterke melodieën, vurig gitaarspel en epische interludia liggen daaraan ten grondslag, zodat het verhaal – met zelfs acteur Herbert Flack als verteller – zich in je huiskamer lijkt af te spelen. Nieuwe vocalist Daan Swinnen kwijt zich uitstekend van zijn taak en weet zich te bewijzen in zowel zwartgeblakerde grimmigheid als lage gromstijl. In sommige songs voegt vrouwelijke zang enige mystieke sereniteit toe, terwijl de orkestrale arrangementen goed uitgewerkt zijn.
Aanraders om zich een idee te vormen zijn ‘A Plague Upon The Land’, het meeslepende ‘Between Man And Wolf’ (waarvan de melodie terugkomt in de bonustrack) en de lange epossen ‘A Secret Life’ en ‘Endgame’ dat nog net voor de epiloog alle aandacht opeist. Een wervelende comeback met schitterend artwork van Kris Verwimp in een moderne, maar dynamische productie.
