STEVE HACKETT: At The Edge Of Light

Ex-Genesis guitarist (and solo artist who’s releasing his 26th studio album!) Steve Hackett may look like that typical English gentleman of quiet and polite nature, he also is a cosmopolitan citizen. His concerns about human beings, animals and the state of this world might be pigeonholed as legendary. Of course we, the fans, most of all enjoy his amazing super emotive guitar skills and soloing, but it would be a lack of respect to focus only on that fragment of his personality.
Steve Hackett has crafted himself into a multifarious musician, one that does not like to repeat himself. He loves experimenting with sounds and ethnic instruments. We already noticed that on earlier solo albums, but with ‘At The Edge Of Light’ he finally managed to create proper world music, he says. To be honest, that’s not really our cup of tea, but in the case of Steve Hackett it is a windfall. His music remains ultra refined and sophisticated, always done to a turn. He wrote the album together with his wife Jo and Roger King, who is – in addition to keyboards – responsible for the orchestral arrangements. In many of the songs, these are really abundantly present. You nearly have a cinematic experience. Just listen to ‘Those Golden Wings’ which appears as a proud monolith in the middle of the album, with momentous strings, storytelling vocals, massive choirs and as finale a very fervent, chunky guitar solo.
But first we have the outlandish sounding intro, followed by ‘Beasts In Our Time’. Initially that song sounds a bit plump, it is sung in a relaxed manner and it switches from trumpet to guitar solos, before ending into rocking smoothness. Very strong is ‘Under The Eye Of The Sun’ and you really have to watch the video for it. The smooth harmony vocals remind us of the sixties, yet of Yes as well. Even the guitar style in this song seems like a wink to that band. Mark the magnificent, mysterious centre-part, there you can imagine being in wild nature and wandering on vast plains. ‘Underground Railroad’ happens to be something completely different again. It has a true American vibe and mainly gospel, blues and country feel, reminding us of the hard work of railroad workers in the past. An oriental vibe reigns in ‘Shadow And Flame’, with dramatic violins, percussion and catchy rhythms. In ‘Hungry Years’ we hear any female chants. It is a very uplifting song, in contrast with its title. By the way, on this album two female singers who worked earlier with Pink Floyd, contributed. The three last songs are connected to each other, but only the last one (‘Peace’) includes any vocals. Due to the wealthy orchestration, the album sounds majestic and of course Hackett does not forget to include any proper prog escapades and loads of mighty guitar solos in between all those different influences. You have to get used to this direction and new elements, but he does it in a wonderful manner.

Steve Hackett mag dan wel de typische Engelse flair van beheersing en beleefdheid uitstralen, hij is ook een kosmopoliet, een wereldburger. Zijn bezorgdheid over mens en dier en de gang van de wereld mag legendarisch genoemd worden. Natuurlijk willen wij hem vooral zijn gitaar laten horen huilen en genieten van ’s mans prachtig gitaarspel, maar het zou oneerbiedig zijn om ons daar alleen op te focussen.
Steve Hackett heeft zich ontwikkeld tot een veelzijdig muzikant die zich allerminst wenst te herhalen. Hij houdt ervan om te experimenteren met geluid en etnische instrumenten. Dat merkten we al eerder op zijn soloalbums, maar met ‘At The Edge Of Light’ is hij er – volgens eigen zeggen – de eerste keer in geslaagd om degelijke wereldmuziek te maken. Nu is dat niet iets waar we echt op zaten te wachten, maar in het geval van Steve Hackett valt het best mee. Zijn muziek blijft immers piekfijn en om door een ringetje te halen. Hij schreef het album samen met zijn vrouw Jo en Roger King die naast keyboards ook verantwoordelijk is voor de orkestrale arrangementen. En die zijn in veel songs erg breed uitgesmeerd, zodat je welhaast een filmische belevenis ervaart. Luister maar naar ‘Those Golden Wings’ dat middenin het album prijkt als een trotse monoliet, met waardige strijkers, verhalende zang, massieve koren en als uitsmijter een bijzonder vurige, vette solo.
Maar na het uitheemse intro is er eerst ‘Beasts In Our Time’ dat een beetje logheid herbergt, met relaxte stem gezongen is en wispelturig switcht van trompet naar gitaar vooraleer rockend te vervolgen. Erg sterk is ‘Under The Eye Of The Sun’ waarvan je de video zeker gezien moet hebben. De egale samenzang doet aan de jaren zestig denken, maar ook aan Yes. Zelfs het gitaarwerk in dit nummer lijkt ernaar te knipogen. Let trouwens op het prachtige, mysterieuze middenstuk, daar waan je jezelf op een eenzame hoogvlakte. ‘Underground Railroad’ is weer helemaal anders. Een erg Amerikaanse sfeer en vooral gospel, blues en country welke aan het harde leven van de spoorwegarbeiders doet denken. Erg oosters klinkt ‘Shadow And Flame’, met dreigende violen, percussie en een vlot ritme. In ‘Hungry Years’ horen we vrouwenzang, een bijzonder luchtig nummer in vergelijking met de titel. Aan dit album werken trouwens twee zangeressen mee die nog bij Pink Floyd gezongen hebben. De drie laatste songs vormen een geheel, maar alleen in het laatste (‘Peace’) horen we nog zang. Door de orkestratie klinkt het album magistraal en natuurlijk vergeet Hackett tussen al die verschillende invloeden niet af en toe een flinke scheut prog te produceren of los te gaan op zijn gitaar. Even wennen, maar het is hem toevertrouwd.
