EVERGREY: The Atlantic

Evergrey always deserved a way much higher status than they actually have now. It is true, the band has swum in turbulent waters during their long time existence, but most recent albums show a reinvigorated outfit and they are created by a solid club of friends. Same goes for ‘The Atlantic’, in the meantime the eleventh studio album from the Swedish progressive metal band.
After ’Hymns For The Broken’ (2014) and ’The Storm Within’ (2016), this happens to be the third part of a trilogy about the adventures of life, strictly being a reflection on the good and bad things of all kinds of relationships you are involved in. Life is a journey across the ocean towards distant, unknown horizons, thus the title ‘The Atlantic’. Consequently the water theme is featured all over. This adventure kicks off with the comprehensive ‘A Silent Arc’ with ultra ponderous riffs and powerful vocals. Of course Tom’s voice once again brims with emotions and melancholy, so that the chorus instantly haunts you. And what about those howling guitar accents of Henrik Danhage? Damned, what a Pink Floyd-ish beauty!!! Right away we are in awe about this rigorous heavy yet refined start of our adventure. Chunky, low-tuned guitars reign in ‘Weightless’, playful piano notes dance through it. Again a stunner, with a seductive catchy chorus, atmospheric passages and next a wide range of heavy riffs. A top notch song! The epic ‘All I Have’ is considerably quieter with its contemplative chants, naturally with a dramatic tinge we all dearly love. The party goes on with ‘A Secret Atlantis’, fast-paced and raging, but regaled with delicious backing vocals and wild keyboard solo as extra. The atmospheric intermezzo ‘The Tidal’ opens the road to ‘End Of Silence with typical storytelling vocals and familiar charms.
All album long, Tom does an amazing job with his yearning, sighing voice, while despair will turn into triumph at the distant horizon. Or not? Every song has a moment supreme when Henrik lets his heart speak through his guitar in peerless soloing. The catchy, up-tempo ‘Currents’ is followed by a sensitive moment in ‘Departure’. Sturdy riffs and dramatic keyboards reign in ‘The Beacon’ and the slightly pent-up rage in ‘The Ocean’ is powerful, but leads us to the conclusion of this album as well. A breath-taking musical journey of a top notch band, with now and then any samplers, strong choruses, gigantic vocals and guitar skills and… well… where is my list of the year for 2019?

Evergrey heeft altijd een nog veel grotere status verdiend dan wat hen ten deel valt. Weliswaar heeft de band in haar lange bestaan soms woelige wateren doorzwommen, maar de laatste albums vertonen een gerevitaliseerde band en zijn gecreëerd door een solide club vrienden. Zo ook ‘The Atlantic’, het inmiddels elfde album van de Zweedse progressieve metal band.
Na ’Hymns For The Broken’ (2014) en ’The Storm Within’ (2016) is dit het derde deel van een trilogie over de avonturen in het leven, wat grotendeels neerkomt op een kijk op de goede en slechte kanten van alle relaties die je aangaat. Het leven is een reis over de oceaan naar onbestemde horizonten, vandaar de titel ‘The Atlantic’. Het thema water komt dan ook veelvuldig voor. Dit avontuur gaat in het veelomvattende ‘A Silent Arc’ van start met ultra zware riffs en krachtige zang. Maar natuurlijk bulkt de stem van Tom weer van emoties en weemoed, zodat het refrein meteen beklijft. En wat is dat met die huilende gitaaraccenten van Henrik Danhage? Verdorie, wat een Pink Floydiaanse pracht!!! We zijn meteen versteld over zo’n rigoureus heftige en toch verfijnde aftrap van ons avontuur. Zompige, laaggestemde gitaren heersen in ‘Weightless’, speelse pianoklanken dartelen ertussen. Ook weer bingo, met een verleidelijk catchy refrein, atmosferische passage en dan een keur aan hakkende riffs. Een topnummer! Het epische ‘All I Have’ met zijn beschouwende zang is aanzienlijk rustiger, uiteraard met dramatische ondertoon waar we van houden. Het feest gaat verder met ‘A Secret Atlantis’, snel en raggend, maar met heerlijke achtergrondzang en gierende keyboardsolo als extra’s. Het atmosferische intermezzo ‘The Tidal’ opent de weg naar ‘End Of Silence’ met typische verhalende zang en vertrouwde charme.
Want Tom is heel het album in grote vorm met zijn smachtende verzuchtingen, waarin wanhoop aan den einder omgezet wordt in triomf. Of toch niet? En elke song heeft een moment suprême wanneer Henrik zijn hart laat spreken in weergaloze gitaarsolo’s. Het vlotte, uptempo ‘Currents’ wordt daarbij gevolgd door een gevoelige noot in ‘Departure’, kloeke riffs en dramatische toetsen heersen in ‘The Beacon’ en het lichtjes opgefokte ‘The Ocean’ is krachtig, maar vormt ook het besluit van dit album. Een adembenemende muzikale reis van een topband, met hier en daar wat samplers, sterke refreinen, gigantische zang en gitaarpartijen en ach… waar is onze jaarlijst voor 2019?
