NAILED TO OBSCURITY: Black Frost

We are very glad when finding out that Nailed To Obscurity has been signed by the mighty Nuclear Blast for their new, fourth album ‘Black Frost’. Their previous album ’King Delusion’ instantly made us realize that we were dealing with an extremely accomplished doom/death metal band and it is nice to see that even a huge label notices it. Nailed To Obscurity hails from a small village in the North of Germany, but this relative isolation did not prevent them from building up a proper live reputation in the meantime. Thus we were at the tiptoe of expectations for ‘Black Frost’ and we can right away come up with superlatives again. It is surely not a copy from earlier work, but the album shows a musical development that leaves you in awe.
The familiar melodic death metal with loads of melancholy has remained, but vocalist Raimund Ennenga uses much more clean vocals. Also whispering and semi-spoken passages – creating an ominous atmosphere – are present in the songs, while the emotive guitar ornaments happen to be atmospheric and seductively fetching. One can say that sometimes one note tells more than dizzy-making cataracts. The seven long songs are cautiously built up in a thoughtful manner, while the contrast between introvert beauty and ferocious outbursts with growls creates a lot of dynamics.
Just listen how the title track starts with drums, bass and one long howling guitar note, but next it goes in crescendo towards full energy. In the slightly progressive guitar foundation of ‘Tears Of The Eyeless’ one can still find a semblance of Opeth fascination, but the soloing itself has more affinity with Pink Floyd’s beauty. I can even tell that they go beyond metal. In ‘Feardom’ an undercurrent of tension is noticeable, reminding us a bit of Tool, while the five piece German band totally surprises with the completely clean sung, ultra melancholic ‘Resonance’. Finally they round off with the steamy track ‘Road To Perdition’. If melodious death metal with doom-laden overtones happens to be your thing, this is a must have. An enthralling mighty album with staggering contrasts and captivating dynamics!

We zijn bijzonder verheugd om te merken dat Nailed To Obscurity voor het nieuwe, vierde album ‘Black Frost’ getekend is door het grote Nuclear Blast. Het vorige album ’King Delusion’ deed ons namelijk meteen beseffen dat hier een uitzonderlijk getalenteerde doom/death metal formatie aan het werk was en het is dan mooi dat zelfs een machtig label dat opmerkt. Nailed To Obscurity komt nochtans uit een klein dorp in het hoge Noorden van Duitsland, maar deze relatieve afzondering heeft hen niet belet om ook al een ferme live reputatie op te bouwen. We waren dus razend benieuwd naar ‘Black Frost’ en kunnen meteen de superlatieven weer boven halen. Het is zeker geen kopie van eerder werk, maar het album vertoont een muzikale ontwikkeling die je versteld achterlaat.
De herkenbare melodieuze death metal met veel weemoed is gebleven, maar zanger Raimund Ennenga gebruikt veel meer cleane zang. Ook fluisterende en halfgesproken passages - welke een dreigende sfeer scheppen - worden gebruikt in de songs, terwijl het emotionele gitaarspel atmosferisch en verleidelijk pakkend is. Hier geldt het gezegde dat je met één noot soms meer kunt zeggen dan met oorverdovende cataracten. De zeven lange songs worden behoedzaam maar minutieus opgebouwd, waarbij het contrast tussen ingetogen schoonheid en woeste uitbarstingen met grunts heel veel dynamiek creëert.
Let maar op hoe het titelnummer aanvangt met drums, bas en een lang aangehouden noot, maar dan in crescendo gaat naar volle wasdom. In het licht progressieve gitaarwerk van ‘Tears Of The Eyeless’ vinden we nog een zweempje Opeth fascinatie, maar de solo’s waaien ons eerder op Pink Floydiaanse wijze tegemoet. Ik durf zelfs te stellen dat ze het metalgenre overstijgen. In ‘Feardom’ merken we dan weer een onderhuidse spanning die ons aan Tool doet denken, terwijl de vijfkoppige Duitse band helemaal verrast met het compleet clean gezongen, ultra melancholieke ‘Resonance’. Om daarna stomend af te sluiten met ‘Road To Perdition’. Wanneer melodieuze death metal met een doomsausje je ding is, dan is dit een verplichte aankoop. Een verbazingwekkend machtig album met superieure contrasten en beklijvende dynamiek!
