FUROR GALLICO: Dusk Of The Ages

With their self-titled debut, Italian folk metal band Furor Gallico put themselves on the metal map as seminal newcomer. The sophomore album did not convince us so much, due to an unfortunately canalized urge for experiments. On this third album ‘Dusk Of The Ages’ we find a new line-up again, except for singer Davide Cicalese and Becky playing Celtic harp. It did not prevent the band of causing quite a stir in their home country and being categorized as established band amongst institutions such as Elvenking and Folkstone.
They did the utmost to make a stunner of this new album (mixed by Tommy Vetterli who is also the studio guru of Eluveitie and mastered by Jens Bogren). Furor Gallico rises in my opinion again. Davide happens to be responsible for death growls as well as clean chants and depraved screams. He is regularly supported by female vocals. The ten songs include magnificent harp playing, acoustic intermezzos in between the bone-crushing riffs and a melancholic timbre of violins as general penchant. Now and then some flutes bring in a cheerful, playful taste, another reason why fans of Eluveitie should really check this out. Two songs are sung in Italian language and they are close to mainstream pop. Yet there is enough stuff to enjoy on ‘Dusk Of The Ages’, so we can speak of a considerable leap forwards.

Met het naamloze debuut kwam de Italiaanse folk metalband Furor Gallico als beloftevolle nieuwkomer uit de bus, de opvolger ‘Songs From The Earth’ kon ons iets minder overtuigen wegens een ongelukkig gekanaliseerde experimenteerdrang. Op dit derde album ‘Dusk Of The Ages’ treffen we wederom een andere bezetting aan, buiten zanger Davide Cicalese en Becky op Keltische harp. Het hield de band niet tegen om zich inmiddels in het thuisland te meten met gevestigde waarden als Elvenking en Folkstone.
Men zette alles op alles om van dit nieuwe album een voltreffer te maken (mix door Tommy Vetterli die ook de studiogoeroe van Eluveitie is en mastering door Jens Bogren). Furor Gallico stijgt terug in onze achting. Davide neemt zowel death grunts als cleane zang en verdorven screams voor zijn rekening, maar hij wordt geregeld geruggensteund door vrouwelijke zang. De tien songs hebben prachtige harpklanken, akoestische intermezzo’s tussen de beenharde riffs en een weemoedige inkleuring van viool als grootste gemene deler. Hier en daar fladdert fluitspel doorheen een song, zodat liefhebbers van Eluveitie dit zeker moeten checken. Twee songs zijn in de Italiaanse taal gezongen en daar wordt het soms wel heel mainstream. Toch valt er genoeg te genieten op ‘Dusk Of The Ages’ om van een sprong voorwaarts te spreken.
