SAOR: Forgotten Paths

Saor is the musical vehicle of Andy Marshall after leaving the Scottish band Falloch. In the meantime he comes up with his fourth studio album ‘Forgotten Paths’ and still he guarantees us a fine portion of atmospheric folk/black metal, widely spread in dreamy, lengthy compositions, rendered with ardour. On ‘Forgotten Paths’ it once again never gets boring, since this musician knows how to build up a song with tension. That’s why his Celtic soundscapes smoothly flow from calm, peaceful moments into ferocious climaxes.
We described this earlier as a kind of rougher version of current Falloch or Alcest. Consequently it is no wonder that exactly Neige (from Alcest) joins the club for a vocal contribution in the title track. The melodious black metal is regaled with keyboards, fragile piano interludes and the compositions are always relished with graceful violins of Lambert Sigura. One can notice any post rock influences in the atmospheric music, since the album brims with fluttering sounds, but on the other hand it has a firm grip on the listener. The beauty of Scottish Highlands is once again illustrated in a wonderful manner on an album that symbolizes a soaring flight over savage sceneries and peaceful calm rivers.

Saor is het muzikale vehikel van Andy Marshall nadat hij het Schotse Falloch verlaten had. Inmiddels toe aan het vierde studioalbum ‘Forgotten Paths’ staat hij nog steeds garant voor atmosferische folk/black metal, breed uitgesmeerd over dromerige, lange composities met pit. Ook op ‘Forgotten Paths’ verveelt dit geen moment, aangezien de muzikant spanningsbogen weet op te bouwen in zijn Keltische soundscapes.
We omschreven dit al eerder als een ruwere vorm van huidige Falloch en Alcest en het is dan allerminst een verrassing dat Neige in het titelnummer een vocale bijdrage levert. De melodieuze black wordt dooraderd met toetsen, fragiele piano intermezzo’s en telkens worden de composities verfraaid door het vioolspel van Lambert Sigura. De sfeervolle muziek is tevens niet vies van enige postrock invloeden, zodat het album weliswaar bol staat van uitwaaierende klanken, maar tevens een vaste grip op de luisteraar heeft. De schoonheid van de Schotse hooglanden wordt bijgevolg eens te meer prachtig geïllustreerd op een album dat een zweeftocht over woeste landschappen en lieflijk klaterende beekjes symboliseert.
