QUEENSRYCHE: The Verdict

A long time after the birth of guitar hero Jimi Hendrix in Seattle and long time before the city became the epicenter of the upcoming grunge boom, the American metropolis used to be automatically associated with Queensrÿche. From 1984 on, the band got huge success with albums like ‘The Warning’, ‘Rage For Order’, ‘Operation:Mindcrime’ and ‘Empire’. More than thirty million albums of this enchanting progressive heavy metal band were sold worldwide. The other side of the coin was eagerly spread out in the media in later years, but with vocalist Todd La Torre (Crimson Glory) in their ranks, the band triumphantly started their second (or third) youth.
‘The Verdict’ happens to be the third album with singer Todd La Torre and he appears to be a Jack-of-all-trades, since he also plays drums on this album. For quite some time Scott Rockenfield had been replaced on stage by the former Kamelot drummer Casey Grillo and now it seems that he was absent in the studio as well. In addition to Todd, the band is made up of both guitarists Michael Wilton and Parker Lundgren and bass player Eddie Jackson. Together with producer Chris ‘Zeuss’ Harris, they have created an energetic piece of art. On the previous albums ’Queensrÿche’ (2013) and ’Condition Hüman’ (2015), the band already sounded as if they were born again and free from boundaries nor burdens. With this one they go another step further, in heaviness and fervency. The songs are more compact, more accessible and heavier. Thus more metal and we like it that way! In addition they remain masters in writing strong melodies (‘Man The Machine’ with its irresistible guitar run for instance) and Todd reigns supreme again as a young Geoff Tate. The firm riff machine of ‘Light-years’ is almost hypnotic, the drive by urgency in ‘Propaganda Fashion’ rocks like fury and the vocals with drawling tinge in ‘Inside Out’ and the amazing ‘Bent’ have an ominous timbre. All this is relished with brilliant guitar solos, played with loads of emotion. Queensrÿche has always been a champion in emotive ballads. Here they illustrate that with the thoughtful ‘Dark Reverie’ and the slow occluding track ‘Portrait’ that will surely give you goose-bumps. The whole thing is regaled with social and political awareness in the lyrics. ‘Blood Of The Levant’ deals with the dramatic events of the Syrian war and ‘Bent’ shines a light on the extinction of the native Americans (Indians). On the thin line between progressive metal and powerful heavy metal, Queensrÿche gracefully balances again with flair on this strong album. When you purchase the European box set, you get a bonus disc as extra with nine songs, amongst them two acoustic tracks and four live tracks of 2012. Exactly the year when La Torre joined Queensrÿche, starting a new chapter in the band’s history.

Lang nadat gitaarheld Jimi Hendrix er geboren werd en lang voor de stad het mekka werd van de opkomende grungeboom, werd het Amerikaanse Seattle automatisch geassocieerd met Queensrÿche. Vanaf 1984 kende de band grote successen met o.a. ‘The Warning’, ‘Rage For Order’, ‘Operation:Mindcrime’ en ‘Empire’. Meer dan dertig miljoen albums werden verkocht van deze verrukkelijke progressieve heavy metal band. De keerzijde van de medaille heeft de pers in latere jaren breed uitgesmeerd, maar met zanger Todd La Torre (Crimson Glory) heeft de band een tweede (of derde) jeugd ontdekt.
‘The Verdict’ is reeds het derde album met zanger Todd La Torre en hij blijkt van vele markten thuis te zijn, want op dit album heeft hij ook de drums voor zijn rekening genomen. Scott Rockenfield werd live al een hele poos vervangen door voormalig Kamelot drummer Casey Grillo en ook in de studio was hij er nu niet bij. Naast Todd leunt de band op beide gitaristen Michael Wilton en Parker Lundgren en bassist Eddie Jackson. Zij hebben – samen met producer Chris ‘Zeuss’ Harris – een energiek werkstuk gemaakt van ‘The Verdict’. Op de vorige albums ’Queensrÿche’ (2013) en ’Conditon Hüman’ (2015) klonk de band al als herboren en bevrijd uit een streng keurslijf, bij deze doen ze er nog een schepje heftigheid bovenop. De songs zijn compact, toegankelijker en harder. Meer metal dus en daar zijn we blij om. Daarbovenop is men nog steeds heer en meester in het schrijven van sterke melodieën (‘Man The Machine’ met zijn onweerstaanbaar gitaarloopje) en zingt Todd alweer de pannen van het dak als een jonge Geoff Tate. De stevige riffs van ‘Light-years’ zijn welhaast hypnotiserend, het jachtige ‘Propaganda Fashion’ rockt je van de sokken en de zang met een lijzig tintje in ‘Inside Out’ en het fantastische ‘Bent’ heeft een dreigend timbre. Dit alles worden verfraaid met schitterende gitaarsolo’s, met veel gevoel gespeeld. Queensrÿche is ook altijd een kanjer geweest in emotionele ballades. Dat illustreren ze hier tijdens het bedachtzame ‘Dark Reverie’ en in de trage afsluiter ‘Portrait’ die je werkelijk kippenvel zal bezorgen. Dit alles wordt voorzien van sociaal bewogen teksten. Zo gaat ‘Blood Of The Levant’ over het drama van de oorlog in Syrië en werpt ‘Bent’ een blik achter de schermen over de uitroeiing van de oorspronkelijke Amerikaanse bevolking (Indianen dus). Op de scheidingslijn tussen progressieve metal en krachtige heavy metal heeft Queensrÿche wederom een heel sterk album gemaakt. Wanneer je de Europese boxset aanschaft, krijg je er nog een bonus disc bij met negen songs, waaronder twee akoestische tracks en vier livetracks uit 2012. Het jaar dat La Torre Queensrÿche vervoegde en de band aan een nieuw hoofdstuk begon.
