I wasn’t too fond of the last TERRA NOVA album, the band of Dutchman Fred Hendrix and his brother Ron. All too predictable and cliché-ridden aor/melodic rock which failed to excite me. TWO OF A KIND sees the two brothers and the other TERRA NOVA members taking a new direction, with a band fronted by two very talented female singers, Esther Brouns and Anita Craenmehr.
The influence of HEART on this project is obvious– there’s no way you can listen to tracks like “Light In The Dark†or “Give Me A Reason†and not think of the Wilson sisters. The albums starts off really well – the aforementioned “Light In The Darkâ€, “The Longest Night†en “Little By Little†are all strong, melodic songs, and there are a few more of those. Unfortunately, the album doesn’t quite maintain this quality. A song like “I Die A Little More Every Day†is a bit boring, and the chorus of “Unbearable†is even just about… well, unbearable.
OK, there’s nothing spectacular here, but if you are into 80’s music which refers to HEART, you probably can’t go wrong with TWO OF A KIND. Skip a few songs and you’ve got a fine album here.

Ik was niet echt wild van het laatste TERRA NOVA-album, de band van Nederlander Fred Hendrix en zijn broer Ron. Een al te voorspelbaar en clichématig aor/melodic rock-album, dat me helemaal niet kon boeien. Met TWO OF A KIND slaan de twee broers, samen met de andere TERRA NOVA leden, een nieuwe richting in, met een band waarin maar liefst twee talentvolle zangeressen aan het roer staan, Esther Brouns and Anita Craenmehr.
De invloed van HEART op dit project is duidelijk – je kan onmogelijk naar songs als “Light In The Dark†of “Give Me A Reason†luisteren en niet aan de Wilson-zusjes denken. Het album neemt een sterke start - het eerder genoemde “Light In The Darkâ€, “The Longest Night†en “Little By Little†zijn alle sterke melodieuze rocknummers, en er zijn er zo nog wel een paar. Jammer genoeg houdt de plaat die kwaliteit niet aan. Een nummer als “I Die A Little More Every Day†is nogal saai, en het refrein van “Unbearable†is zelfs bijna… wel, ondraaglijk.
OK, er staat hier niets spectaculairs op, maar als je houdt van 80’s muziek à la HEART, zal je je alvast geen buil vallen met deze plaat. Sla een paar nummertjes over en je houdt een heel leuk album over.
