YE BANISHED PRIVATEERS: Hostis Humani Generis

Weer een hilarisch folk ensemble dat dweept met piraten, bacchanalen en folklore? Jawel! Ye Banished Privateers heeft wel dertig crewleden, maar als we stellen dat er een brede waaier aan zang is (de mannelijke piraat met doorzopen stem, zijn melancholieke verteller anderzijds, mooie vrouwenzang en natuurlijk vooral veel trotse samenzang) op een bedje van violen, banjo, draailier en percussie, dan zitten we safe.
Met de burleske single ‘No Prey, No Pay’ waren we allerminst overtuigd, maar beetje bij beetje gaat dit poppentheater vol dramatiek en weemoed meer en meer respect afdwingen. Dit Zweedse gezelschap weet waar men mee bezig is en ze doen dat goed. Er zijn inderdaad boertige drinkliederen, maar anderzijds… wie kan weerstaan aan de dramatiek van ‘Flintlock’? Wie gaat niet mee in de repetitieve hymne ‘Parting Song’ vol smart? Wie geeft niet toe dat ‘A Swinging We Must Go’ werkt om je in te pakken met lugubere humor?
Ye Banished Privateers heeft iets dat hen uitzonderlijk maakt en dat wrijven ze er nog eens flink in met de esoterische afsluiters ‘Death Of Bellows’ en ‘Why The Big Whales Sing’. Zweden heeft – naast een legendarische status als metalland – een stevige reputatie wat folkmuziek betreft. Leg de harde riffs even naast je neer en laat je inpalmen door deze troubadours die zich uiten als verdorven piraten, maar levenswijsheid met je kunnen delen. Wij stonden er versteld van. Dit is meer dan rum en yarrrrrrrrrr…
