I’ve always had a soft spot for Nicky Moore’s vocals, and as there are too few albums around that feature his voice, it is always nice to find a new one, even if it is, as the title says, just Leftovers, Relics & Rarities.
MAMMOTH was the band Moore started with GILLAN’s John McCoy. The sheer size of the band’s members was to be the band’s selling point, hence the recruitment of other heavyweights Kenny Cox and Tubby Vinnie Reed. The original line-up didn’t last long, though, as guitarist Cox wasn’t too happy with the commercial direction the band took, so he left before the first (and sole) album was finished. Guitars were eventually recorded by several players, among which John McCoy himself, Big Mac Baker and McCoy’s longtime friend and collaborator Bernie Tormé.
The band’s gimmick proved to be their undoing as well. Yes, it was very funny seeing those ‘fatmen’ in the promo shots and video clips, and seeing them live must have been an extraordinary experience as well. But then this made it very hard to take them seriously as a band. Which is a pity, because musically this band really delivered, as shown on their one and only album, Mammoth, an excellent slice of melodic heavy rock from 1988.
Leftovers, Relics & Rarities features some early demos for the album, outtakes and other bits and pieces. Not exactly an alternative for the Mammoth album, but as a companion album, it does show what the band was capable of. As usual with Angel Air releases, the booklet has some very insightful liner notes. Oh, and did I mention that any excuse is a good one to buy something featuring Nicky Moore?

Ik heb altijd een zwak gehad voor de zang van Nicky Moore, en daar er veel te weinig albums verkrijgbaar zijn waar zijn stem op voorkomt, is het altijd leuk iets nieuws te vinden, zelfs al zijn het, zoals de titel zegt, slechts Leftovers, Relics & Rarities.
MAMMOTH was de band die Moore opstartte met GILLANs John McCoy. Het lichamelijk volume van de bandleden moest DE aandachtstrekker zijn die hen moest verkopen, vandaar ook de recrutering van andere heavyweights Kenny Cox en Tubby Vinnie Reed. De oorspronkelijke line-up hield echter niet lang stand, omdat gitarist Cox niet echt happy was met de commerciële richting waar de band voor koos. Hij verliet de groep voor het eerste (en enige) album af was. De gitaren werden gecompleteerd door verschillende spelers, onder wie John McCoy zelf, Big Mac Baker en een oude bekende van McCoy, Bernie Tormé.
De gimmick van de groep betekende uiteindelijk ook hun ondergang. Juist, het was erg grappig om die ‘fatmen’ te zien in de promofoto’s en de videoclips, en hen live aan het werk zien, moet ook een hele belevenis geweest zijn. Maar het maakte het wel moeilijk om hen serieus te nemen. Dat is bijzonder jammer, want muzikaal stond de band er echt wel, getuige hun enige album, Mammoth, een uitstekend stukje melodieuze heavy rock uit 1988.
Op Leftovers, Relics & Rarities staan enkele vroege demo’s voor het a lbum, outtakes en nog wat andere fragmenten. Niet echt een alternatief voor het Mammoth album, maar als aanvulling hierop toont het echt wel waar de band toe in staat was. Zoals gewoonlijk bij uitgaven van Angel Air krijg je er een boekje bij met een zeer informatieve hoestekst. Oh, en heb ik al gezegd dat elk excuus goed is om iets te kopen waarop Nicky Moore voorkomt?
