There’s been a lot of debate over QUEENS’s recruitment of Paul Rodgers as the successor to Freddy Mercury. Fact is that no-one can replace Freddy Mercury, and that QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS is an entirely different band. Still, if anyone could come close, it’s Paul Rodgers, arguably one of rock’s best vocalists in history. Although I quite like QUEEN-new-style, you just can’t beat Rodgers doing his own material. His newest live album gives a blueprint of what the man stands for.
Quite a lot of FREE songs – the classics, obviously (“Wishing Wellâ€, “All Right Nowâ€, “Fire And Waterâ€) but also a few you wouldn’t expect: “I’ll Be Creepin’â€, “Ride On A Ponyâ€, “I’m A Mover†and a few more. The expected BAD COMPANY classics are also here (“Can’t get Enoughâ€, “Feel Like Makin’ Loveâ€, “Bad Companyâ€,…) , and even “Radioactiveâ€, from THE FIRM (Rodgers’s collaboration with Jimmy Page) is played, although I’m not too fond of this version, I’m afraid. Still, there’s very little to complain about. Even when you are just beginning to realise that guitarists Howard Leese (ex-HEART) and 17-year-old Kurtis Dengler just can’t fill (FREE’s) Paul Kossoff’s shoes, they pull off the most magical twin guitar solo, in FREE’s “Be My Friendâ€, one of my personal favourites. The album also contains a new song, the fantastic “Warboys (A Prayer For Peace)â€.

Er is nogal wat gediscussieerd over de aanwerving van Paul Rodgers bij QUEEN als opvolger van Freddy Mercury. Feit is dat niemand Mercury kan vervangen, en dat QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS gewoonweg een totaal andere band is. Maar toch, als iemand in de buurt kan komen, is het Paul Rodgers wel, een van de allerbeste rockzangers uit de geschiedenis. Hoewel ik QUEEN-nieuwe-stijl best goed vind, gaat er niets boven Paul Rodgers die gewoon zijn eigen ding doet. Zijn nieuwste live-album geeft een mooi overzicht van wat de man allemaal te bieden heeft.
Heel wat FREE-songs op de setlist – de klassiekers natuurlijk (“Wishing Wellâ€, “All Right Nowâ€, “Fire And Water), maar ook een paar die je niet onmiddellijk zou verwachten:
“I’ll Be Creepin’â€, “Ride On A Ponyâ€, “I’m A Mover†en nog een paar. De verwachte BAD COMPANY-klassiekers staan er ook op (“Can’t get Enoughâ€, “Feel Like Makin’ Loveâ€, “Bad Companyâ€â€¦), en zelfs “Radioactive†van THE FIRM (Rodgers’ samenwerking met Jimmy Page) wordt gespeeld, hoewel ik niet echt warm loop van deze versie. Verder is er echter weinig om over te mopperen. En net wanneer je begint door te hebben dat gitaristen Howard Leese (ex-HEART) en de 17-jarige Kurtis Dengler niet in de schoenen kunnen staan van (FREE’s) Paul Kossoff, spelen ze de meest geweldige twingitaarsolo, in het FREE-nummer “Be My Friendâ€, een van mijn persoonlijke favorieten. Op het album staat ook een nieuw nummer, het fantastische “Warboys (A Prayer For Peace)â€.
