AMASEFFER: Exodus - Slaves For Life

There are countries that do not swamp us with metal albums, but if they announce something with any pride, it leaves you in awe. Israel is such a country. It was there that Erez Yohanan worked in silence for years on a trilogy about the exodus. Everything was cautiously planned and prepared. ‘Slaves For Life’ is the first part and a true masterpiece brimming with superb cinematic metal. It leads you through an adventurous musical Odyssey of seventy-seven minutes. Erez engaged two young sublime guitarists who colour the songs with amazing guitar leads and he managed to interest no less a person than Mats Leven (of Therion and Krux fame) for the lead vocals. Add the oriental melancholic chants of Orphaned Land front man Kobi Farhi to the expressive voice of this metal giant and you know we are into something good.
Most of the songs are lengthy, extensive epics going through diverse moods, without ever losing the power of a fine melody out of sight. Musical boundaries are strange to Amaseffer; when a vigorous grunt is needed, Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy is brought to the scene (though her contribution is very small and no reason at all to frighten people who still detest grunts). In spite of its variegation, ‘Slaves For Life’ is a fluent homogeneous musical trip that cannot be missing in any music collection. They go beyond genres as metal or prog, just because putting this into a pigeonhole is senseless ‘cause we are talking about a masterpiece. This is an absolute stunner you will see everywhere in people’s lists of the year. The word “revelation” has reached a new dimension!

Er zijn van die landen die ons niet bepaald overspoelen met metalalbums, maar wanneer er iets met enige trots aangekondigd wordt, laat het je wel in verrukking achter. Israël is zo’n land. Daar werkte ene Erez Yohanan jaren in alle stilte aan een trilogie over de exodus. Alles werd uiterst precies voorbereid. ‘Slaves For Life’ is het eerste deel en een waar meesterwerk vol symfonische metal die je 77 minuten meesleept tijdens een avontuurlijke muzikale odyssee. Erez engageerde twee jonge sublieme gitaristen die de nummers met huiveringwekkende gitaarpartijen inkleuren en wist voor de solozang niemand minder dan de van Therion en Krux bekende Mats Leven te interesseren. Voeg bij het expressieve stemgeluid van deze metalgigant de oriëntaalse weemoedige zang van Orphaned Land frontman Kobi Farhi en je weet al dat er weinig mis kan gaan.
De meeste nummers zijn lange epossen die verschillende stemmingen accentueren, zonder de kracht van een goede melodie ook maar een moment uit het oog te verliezen. Muzikale beperkingen zijn Amaseffer vreemd, wanneer er even een krachtige grunt nodig is, wordt Angela Gossow van Arch Enemy erbij gehaald (al is haar bijdrage erg summier en geen rede om mensen af te schrikken die nog steeds de schubben krijgen van grunts). Ondanks zijn verscheidenheid is ‘Slaves For Life’ een vloeiende muzikale trip die in geen enkele muziekverzameling mag ontbreken. Genres als metal of prog worden overstegen, omdat het hokjesdenken gewoon zinloos is bij zulk een meesterwerk. Dit is een topper die hoog in de jaarlijsten zal eindigen. Het woord revelatie krijgt hierbij een nieuwe dimensie!
