Alesana is an American post-hardcore band from Raleigh, North Carolina, formed in 2004. This release “Where Myth Fades To Legend” is the follow up to the band’s debut album “On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax”. In 2006 the band signed on to Fearless Records. And this turned out to be the right decision. Their latest release is a very ambitious project in which the band tries to present a unique sound by mixing various styles of heavy music: emo/screamo, power punk, hardcore, death metal, heavy metal and rock. To make this work the band got into the studio with top producer Steve Evetts (Symphony X, Sepultura, Dillinger Escape Plan etc…). The result is a top class album. Maybe this album is not for everyone, but it delivers fine hardcore and metal in its most glorious form. One of the main attractions is the fantastic voice of Shawn Milke. When I listened to Milke’s voice, a part of me hears Claudio Sanchez (Coheed and Cambria). Not only the voice reminds me of Coheed and Cambria but also the way the songs are written. There are so many layers in the songs that you find something new about them each time you take the album for a spin in your CD player. Awesome! At first hearing, the songs seem to lack direction and seem to be going nowhere. Give it a second try and this album will definitely become more intriguing with each listening. “Where Myth Fades to Legend” is one of the most creative and interesting albums I’ve heard in a long time. Jump on this rollercoaster of post hardcore and heavy rock and enjoy. I am convinced this album will grab you and won’t let you go! Horns up!

Deze Amerikaanse post hardcore band vindt zijn wortels in North Carolina. De groep werd opgericht in 2004 in het stadje Raleigh. Twee jaar later brachten deze jongens hun eerste full cd uit “On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax”. De teksten op deze cd verwezen allen naar de Griekse mythologie. En onze vriend Icarus, kan ook wel symbool staan voor deze band. Want aan ambitie is er bij deze jongens geen gebrek. Zeker op hun nieuwe cd “Where Myth Fades to Legend”, uitgebracht op het befaamde Fearless Records en met Steve Evetts achter de knoppen, leggen de heren de muzikale lat voor zichzelf zeer hoog. Er zitten namelijk zoveel lagen in ieder nummer, dat je beslist meerdere luisterbeurten nodig hebt om alles te doorgronden en van alle nummers maximaal te kunnen genieten. Bij een eerste luisterbeurt lijkt het wel alsof de heren een mix hebben willen maken van alle muziekstijlen die ze goed vinden. We horen een mengeling van emo/screamo, cleane zang met hoog poppy stemmetje, grunts, metal en punk. We noteren hevige riffs, orkestrale stukjes, een ballad, korte, gebalde symfopareltjes, powerpunk, meer poppy stukjes… Kortom, deze cd dwingt je om goed bij de les te blijven en alle invloeden rustig op jou te laten inwerken. Wie echter de tijd neemt om dit werkstuk ten volle te laten rijpen, ontdekt een verdomd knap gemaakte cd.
Wat zeker opvalt is dat de hoge, cleane zangstem van Shawn Milke enorm lijkt op die van Claudio Sanchez en de muziek dus een enorme Coheed and Cambria-feel geeft. Fans van vernoemde band kan ik deze cd dan ook blindelings aanraden.
Tussen alle herrie en tempowisselingen valt de ballad “As You Wish” enorm op. Dit muzikaal kunststukje laat horen dat deze band nog een enorm potentieel heeft om ons zeker in de toekomst te blijven verrassen. “Where Myth Fades to Legend” is een echte voltreffer. Mythisch en legendarisch? Neen. Verduiveld knap gemaakt? Absoluut.
Een emotionele bom, een eruptie van riffs, tempowisselingen en knappe songs! Wat mij betreft een vette aanrader!
