What is there to say about a new Axel Rudi Pell release? Very little, actually. Just take the review of his previous albums and change the song titles. It’s the same classic, melodic metal style, which has hardly changed since he started about two decades ago. The excellent songs this time around are: ‘Higher’, ‘Ain’t Gonna Win’ and ‘Angel Eyes’. The ballads are called ‘Crossfire’ and ‘Northern Lights’, and you know he always does these very well. There’s another great instrumental as well with ‘Emotional Echoes’. Apart from this, this is just more of the same of what we’ve come to expect from ARP.
“Tales Of the Crown” is another solid release and I certainly don’t want to sound disappointed; the fact that his albums are all more or less alike probably won’t be a problem for the fans. It just doesn’t make for very good reviews. So, let’s keep this simple: if you liked Axel Rudi Pell before, you will definitely like this one as well. If you never liked his work, this won’t change your mind. If you still have to discover the man, you might as well buy this CD as any one of his previous ones. There you go...

Wat kan er nog over Axel Rudi Pell gezegd worden? Heel weinig, eigenlijk. Neem de recensie van een van zijn vorige platen en verander gewoon de songtitels. Het is nog steeds die klassieke, melodieuze metalstijl, die nauwelijks veranderd is sinds hij zo’n twintig jaar geleden debuteerde. De knapste nummers heten dit keer ‘Higher’, ‘Ain’t Gonna Win’ en ‘Angel Eyes’. De ballads zijn ‘Crossfire’ en ‘Northern Lights”, en je weet hoe goed Pell is in dit soort tracks. Er is ook weer een knap instrumentaaltje met ‘Emotional Echoes’, het enige nummer dat enigszins origineel klinkt naar Pell-normen. Daarnaast is het weer meer van hetzelfde van wat we van ARP kunnen verwachten.
“Tales Of The Crown” is absoluut weer een knappe plaat en ik wil zeker niet teleurgesteld klinken; het feit dat al zijn albums min of meer hetzelfde klinken zal voor de fans waarschijnlijk geen enkel probleem vormen. Het is enkel moeilijk om er nog goede recensies over te schrijven. Laat ons het daarom dus simpel houden: als je Axel Rudi Pell voorheen al goed vond, zul je deze plaat weer erg kunnen waarderen. Als dat niet het geval was, zal deze dat niet veranderen. Als je de man nog moet leren kennen, kun je net zo goed deze plaat kopen als een van zijn vorige. Voilà…
