I was quite impressed with GMT’s debut album “Bitter & Twisted” from 2006. GMT is a band formed by ex-GILLAN veterans John McCoy and Bernie Tormé, along with drummer Robin Guy. Their brand of raw heavy rock with a decidedly punky attitude would normally not be quite my cup of tea, but the enthusiasm, the rough & ready approach and the great, diverse songs really caught on and the album became a personal favourite. Now the band is back with a second album, and it’s every bit as interesting as the debut.
The album blasts off with ‘Punko Rocco’, which is sung by TWISTED SISTER vocalist Dee Snider (who already worked with Tormé in DESPERADO). There’s also a guest spots for that other ex-GILLAN cohort Colin Towns on keyboards on two tracks. Just like its predecessor, “Evil Twin” is an album that has to be experienced. Thought it’s dirty and basic rock, there’s so much going on during the 10 songs that it’s impossible to get bored. Favourites include the title song, the heavy “Wheel Of Fortune” (with a stunning guitar solo), the Indian-flavoured ‘Jonny Sitar’ and the long, big blues track “Perfumed Garden”, another vehicle for Tormé to show off his immense talents on the guitar.

Ik was behoorlijk onder de indruk van GMT’s debuutalbum “Bitter & Twisted” uit 2006. GMT is een band gevormd door ex-GILLAN veteranen John McCoy en Bernie Tormé, samen met drummer Robin Guy. Hun stijl van rauwe heavy rock, met een overduidelijke punky attitude, is normaalgesproken niet echt mijn ding, maar het enthousiasme, de no-nonsenseaanpak en het sterke, gevarieerde songmateriaal imponeerden me wel en de plaat werd een persoonlijke favoriet. Nu is de groep terug met een tweede album, dat al even interessant is als het debuut.
De band vliegt erin met ‘Punko Rocco’, dat wordt gezongen door TWISTED SISTERs Dee Snider (die eerder al met Tormé samenwerkte in DESPERADO). Er is ook een gastrol weggelegd voor Colin Towns (ook ex-GILLAN) op twee nummers. Net als de voorganger is “Evil Twi” een album dat je moet ondergaan. Er gebeurt in de loop van de 10 nummers zo veel dat je je onmogelijk kan vervelen. Favorieten zijn het titelnummer, het zware “Wheel Of Fortune” (met een geweldige gitaarsolo), het Indisch getinte ‘Jonny Sitar’ en de lange, grootse bluestrack “Perfumed Garden”, waarop Tormé zijn enorme talenten als gitarist nog een kan tentoonspreiden.
