ASMEGIN: Arv

Asmegin means “by the might of the gods” in old Norse. And these guys definitely needed a hand of the gods to finish this album. Asmegin has always been searching for the perfect blend of original Scandinavian folk tunes and metal. The band was formed in 1998, so it took these Norwegian musicians ten years to realise their dream. Do not expect instant classic melodies or familiar riffs when you put this CD in your layer. The complex music takes some time to crawl into your head. This album contains a wide range of musical influences: folk, metal, doom, polka, gipsy, rock etc… There also is a range of vocal styles over the various riffs, ranging from doom-esque screams to clean operatic female vocals. Most of the lyrics are in their native tongue and this gives the music an even more mystic and epic swing. This is Asmegin’s second full CD release and I must admit I did not know this band very well. Frankly, to be quiet honest, this is also due to the lack of promotion by the band itself. It took Asmegin over five years to finish this album and on the way lots of things happened. New band members joined the group for a short period of time and then left, the updates on the bands web site stopped, the message board died and all the communication with the outside world ended. However the band now proudly present their second full CD release “Arv”. The album sounds very progressive and one might loose direction while walking through the Norwegian forests or sailing in the Scandinavian fjords, but please allow this album to grow. Do not get lost in all these Nordic myths and sagas but take your time and let the magic slowly get hold of you. It looks like this band now definitely found its second breath. The band signed a four album deal with Napalm/SPV and contacted Lasse Lammert (Alestorm) to do the mastering of this “Arv” album. If you like Scandinavian Metal or are even just interested in finding out what Nordic folk metal sounds like, I recommend you, give Asmegin a listen. Hoist the Norwegian flag, grab a beer and play some Viking folk metal! A fine album.

Asmegin betekent “door de kracht van de goden” en die goden hebben deze heren beslist nodig gehad om uiteindelijk dit album op de wereld los te laten. Het kostte de heren van Asmegin heel wat bloed, zweet en tranen om hun droom te verwezenlijken: het maken van een unieke mix van metal met Noorse traditionele folkmuziek. Deze Noorse band werd in 1998 opgericht en levert dan 10 jaar later met dit tweede album eindelijk het product dat de heren reeds lang voor ogen hadden: een zeer geslaagde en originele mix van Noorse folk en doom metal. Alle nummers zijn gezongen in het Noors. De vocalen zijn een brede waaier van doomuithalen, brutale grunts, cleane zang en vrouwelijke sopraanstemmen. Dit alles ondersteunt door een hele lijst van instrumenten. Ik hoor violen, accordeons, hammond orgels, dubbele basdrums, snelle gitaar riffs…kortom het hele scala komt aan bod. Toch moet ik eerlijkheidshalve bekennen dat ik de band niet echt goed kende. Dat was gedeeltelijk aan mezelf te wijten, maar was toch ook voor een stukje de schuld van de band zelf. Na de release van hun debuut cd “ Him Vordende Sod & So” uit 2003 werd het zeer stil rond Asmegin. Vele leden verlieten de groep en vervangers kwamen en gingen. Ook de communicatie met de buitenwereld stierf langzaam uit: geen website updates, geen tourinfo, geen bandinfo, geen release…kortom geen enkel teken van leven. Het leek wel of de band er het bijltje bij neergelegd had. Maar niks is minder waar. De heren hebben de Vikingstrijdbijl ter hand genomen en tonen ons nu trots hun tweede full cd. “Arv” is een behoorlijk progressief werkstuk geworden, dat je beslist een paar keer moet beluisteren alvorens het zijn volle diepgang prijsgeeft. Na een eerste luisterbeurt lijk je te verdwalen in deze Noorse fjorden en wouden waar zich eeuwenoude Noorse sagen en mythen afspelen. Maar laat je niet ontmoedigen en neem geduldig je tijd. De rijkdom van dit Noorse folk metal epos schreeuwt om meerdere luisterbeurten. Ook het geluid van dit album staat als een huis. Als ik je vertel dat de mastering van dit schijfje gedaan werd door Lasse Lammert (Alestorm) dan weet je dat deze knoppendraaier de ideale stuurman is aan boord van dit Noorse Vikingschip. Ben je geïnteresseerd in Noorse folk metal of wil je gewoon eens ontdekken wat dit genre juist inhoud, dan is deze release beslist een fijne plaats om je ontdekkingstocht te beginnen. Wij zitten reeds in onze sloep, varen doorheen de Noorse metalfjorden en genieten van dit sterk album. Hoist the Norwegian flag, bring us some beer and play us some brutal Nordic folk metal! Fijn album.
