TANKARD: Thirst

Last year Tankard celebrated its 25th anniversary. The jolly guys did not only drink an extra beer on this occasion, but they thought about writing the fourteenth studio album as well. With the ultimate suitable title ‘Thirst’ and embellished with a funny cover, this happens to be another tight and solid thrash metal album. They once started as a hybrid of the NWOBHM and punk, later they built up more and more respect due to their skilfulness and endless dedication and they became one of the established bands in the German thrash metal scene.
Listening to a Tankard album is always big fun. The characteristic voice of Gerre, the hacking tight thrash riffs and melodic guitar solos may hold no surprises anymore, yet the band always succeeds in writing a number of new fetching songs. They have already shot a videoclip for the infectious ‘Stay Thirsty!’. The built-in accelerations and festive slogans are this time assimilated in songs such as ‘Octane Warriors’, ‘Sexy Feet Under’ and the tense ‘G.A.L.O.W.’ in which prominent bass runs rule. There is only one song that differs from this proved recipe. That is ‘When Daddy Comes To Play’. It deals with the heavy loaded, emotionally charged theme: a man who locked up and misused his daughter in a cellar for many years. This is quite surprising for Tankard, the more because one can hear a children’s choir too. But the fans will have more joy with cheerful, lightly songs like ‘Myevilfart’ and ‘Hyperthermia’, inviting you to bang your head and party. Once again the production of Andy Classen assures that these new beer hymns sound like a bell. Moreover the limited digipak edition contains an extra track, the videoclip of ‘Stay Thirsty!’ and a DVD with footage of Tankard at Bang Your Head festival. Now I am thirsty myself! Vorig jaar vierde Tankard het 25-jarige bestaan. De vrolijke bende hees daar niet alleen een extra biertje op, maar dacht ook nog aan het componeren van het veertiende studioalbum. Met de uitermate toepasselijke titel ‘Thirst’ en verpakt in een grappige hoes is dat weer een strak en degelijk thrash metal album geworden. Ooit begonnen zij met een kruising tussen de NWOBHM en punk, later bouwden ze meer en meer respect op door hun vakmanschap en tomeloze inzet en werden één van de vaste waarden in de Duitse thrash metal scene.
Luisteren naar een Tankard album is altijd plezierig. De karakteristieke stem van Gerre, de hakkende thrash riffs en de melodieuze gitaarsolo’s mogen dan geen verrassing meer inhouden, toch weet de band telkens een aantal toffe meebrullers te pennen. Voor het aanstekelijke ‘Stay Thirsty!’ is alvast een videoclip opgenomen. De ingebouwde versnellingen en feestelijke leuzen zitten ditmaal verwerkt in songs als ‘Octane Warriors’, ‘Sexy Feet Under’ en het strakke ‘G.A.L.O.W.’ waar prominente basloopjes in heersen. Er is slechts één song die afwijkt van dit strakke, maar beproefde stramien. Dat is ‘When Daddy Comes To Play’. Hierin wordt een zwaar beladen thema aangekaart: een man die zijn dochter jarenlang opsloot en misbruikte. Dit is toch wel verrassend voor Tankard. Het nummer bevat zelfs onschuldige kinderkoren. Maar de fans zullen meer genieten van luchtige songs als ‘Myevilfart’ en ‘Hyperthermia’ die je uitnodigen tot headbangen en feesten. De productie van Andy Classen zorgt er wederom voor dat de nieuwe odes aan het bier klinken als een klok. Het gelimiteerde digipak bevat bovendien nog een extra track, de videoclip van ‘Stay Thirsty!’ en een dvd met beelden van Tankard op het Bang Your Head festival. Ik heb er zowaar dorst van gekregen.
