FALL OF THE LEAFE: Aerolithe

Sometimes you are overtaken by the facts. I went on holidays and by the time I got back the news was spread that Fall Of The Leafe has split. Right after the release of their sixth studio album the band called it quits – as you may have noticed in our news bulletins – but don’t let it prevent you from checking out and enjoy their latest effort, called ‘Aerolithe’. And why is ‘Graceful Retreat’ printed in italics? An indication of the coming split?
After a soaring keyboard intro, ‘All The Good Faith’ offers some proper typical Finnish gothic metal with catchy vocal-lines and accentuating guitar licks. Vocals of Tuomas Tuominen are clean with a melancholic gasp, but in nearly every track there are some rougher parts that refer to the death metal past of the band. It results in exciting accelerations with nearly grunts in the wilder ‘Drawing Worry’. Well-dosed guitar solos are regularly interwoven; those of ‘Sink Teeth Here’ immediately leaps to the eye. Moments of reflections we have too. ‘At A Breath’s Pace’ and ‘Especially By Stealth’ are semi-ballads in which classical piano is featured. The folk influences of earlier albums are gone. The names of Tragically Hip, REM and (early) Live pop up as points of reference from time to time. As you see, that’s more alternative rock or guitar rock. Since this is a mixture coming from every direction, you simply cannot accuse Fall Of The Leafe of copying anything. It is only a pity – but very understandable as well – that they want to concentrate on something different after years of underground struggles. But it is worth checking out their back catalogues!

Soms word je ingehaald door de feiten. Ik ging even op verlof en toen ik goed en wel terug was, sijpelde het bericht door dat Fall Of The Leafe gesplit was. Vlak na de release van hun zesde studioalbum gooide de band de handdoek in de ring – zoals je ook kan lezen in onze nieuwsberichten – maar laat dit je niet tegenhouden om van dit laatste album ‘Aerolithe’ te genieten. En waarom staat ‘Graceful Retreat’ schuin gedrukt? Een indicatie van de nakende split?
Na een zweverig toetsenintro schiet ‘All The Good Faith’ los in typische Finse gothic metal met toegankelijke zanglijnen en accentuerende gitaarlicks. De zang van Tuomas Tuominen is helder met een melancholieke snik, maar in bijna elk nummer zijn er ook enkele ruwere uitvallen die refereren naar het death metal verleden van de band. Dit zorgt voor knappe acceleraties met bijna grunt in het wildere ‘Drawing Worry’. Goed gedoseerde gitaarsolo’s komen ook geregeld voor, die van ‘Sink Teeth Here’ trok meteen mijn aandacht. Momenten dat men even tot inkeer komt zijn er ook. ‘At A Breath’s Pace’ en ‘Especially By Stealth’ zijn semi-ballads waar klassieke piano wat meer op de voorgrond treedt. De folk invloeden van de vorige albums zijn wel helemaal verdwenen. De namen Tragically Hip, REM en Live (in de beginperiode) durfden nu al eens opduiken als vergelijkingspunt. Je ziet, dat is dan weer meer alternatieve rock of gitaarrock. De mix komt echter uit alle richtingen en daarom kan je Fall Of The Leafe allerminst als kopie van iets betichten. Het is alleen spijtig, maar ook begrijpelijk, dat ze na jaren opereren in de marge van welk subgenre van metal dan ook het bijltje er bij neergooien. Maar het is wel de moeite waard om hun back catalogus even te onderzoeken.
