Jethro Tull - Forest National - Brussel - 01/06/2007

 Many years have passed since Jethro Tull was last scheduled to play at Forest National. The band has been playing sold out concerts these previous past years at Ancienne Belgique, so now it’s about time that they move back to the bigger venue. The organizers were satisfied with this move because they doubled their revenue. Forest National wasn’t completely sold out, but that didn’t bother anyone, especially not the fans :-).
 A concert by Jethro Tull is always a kind of party. Ian Anderson’s voice isn’t what it used to be, but the real Tull fans are forgiving because his effort and devotion always remains. Ian knows how to capture his audience, thanks to his band and their skilful performances. Of course, the music itself has something to do about it too J. The songs have been given a more instrumental treatment. I can imagine that it was difficult for an inexperienced Tull fan to recognize the songs in the midst of all that instrumentalism. But for the experienced fans, this was very interesting. There wasn’t a single song that was played like it had appeared on the album. All the songs were dressed up until the base structure and after that, were then slowly built up. They were arranged and played in a totally different way but with small hints of recognizability for the seasoned listener. Sometimes the songs started with the bridge, sometimes with the chorus, sometimes slower, sometimes faster, here a tune, there a riff, but always with a capital A for Art… big art.
The ‘jazz’ musicians were very professional, the cream of the crop. Martin Barre was given free reign to play some sublime guitar and drummer Doane Parry, together with bassist David Goodier, kept everything in tempo. John O’Hara, the keyboard player and accordion player (who had already worked with Ian on Rupi’s Dance) took care of the appropriate decorations and expressions. In the meantime, all the fans were treated to a beautiful compilation of their repertoire…â€
 Living in the Pastâ€, “Thick as a Brick†(in a shortened version), “Boureéâ€, just to name a few. However, not all the songs were so obvious, such as “America†or “Pastime With Good Company†(King Henry’s Madrigal). The most impressive song was the orchestral version of “Aqualungâ€. It sounded more like the version from ‘Ian Anderson Plays Orchestral Jethro Tull’ from 2005 than from the original version from 1971. There were also a few songs played from solo albums: “The Water Carrier†from ‘The Secret Language of Birds’ by Ian and “After You, After Me†from ‘Stage Left’ by Martin.
 After a concert of nearly two hours, they had then played the very well known “Locomotive Breath†as an encore. The music and the originality of this concert will be a hot topic in the hallways at work and I’m sure they will all be coming back for more :-).

Het was al jaren geleden dat Jethro Tull nog eens in Vorst Nationaal geprogrammeerd stond. Omdat de band de laatste jaren steeds in een uitverkocht Ancienne Belgique speelde werd het de hoogste tijd om terug naar een grotere zaal uit te wijken. De organisatoren waren in elk geval tevreden met deze verhuis want de opkomst bedroeg meer dan het dubbele. Dat Vorst niet volledig uitverkocht was kon dus niemand echt deren. Ook de fans niet…:-)
Een concert van Jethro Tull is altijd een beetje een feest. Nochtans is Ian Anderson’s stem de laatste jaren niet meer was ze geweest is. Doch iedere echte Tullfan vergeeft hem dat met een brede glimlach omdat de inzet en sfeer steeds optimaal blijft. Meer nog, door hun vakkundig optreden weet Ian Anderson met zijn band steeds het publiek op zijn hand te krijgen. Uiteraard zit de muziek daar ook voor iets tussen :-).  De songs krijgen een meer instrumentale ‘behandeling’. Toch denk ik dat het voor een Jethro Tull fan zonder ervaring een helse inspanning moet zijn om tussen het bos de songs te erkennen. Voor de doorgewinterde fan is dit echter juist het meest interessante aan het geheel. Geen enkele song wordt gespeeld zoals hij op het album terecht kwam. Alle songs worden ‘uitgekleed’ tot op de basisstructuur en dan langzaamaan terug opgebouwd. Totaal anders gearrangeerd, totaal anders gespeeld met juist voldoende vleugjes herkenbaarheid voor de geoefende luisteraar. Soms beginnend met de brug, soms met het refrein, soms trager, soms sneller, hier een riedeltje, daar een rifje maar steeds met de hoofdletter K van Kunst… grote kunst.
 De selectie van ‘Jazz’ muzikanten die de grootmeester en zijn rechterhand begeleiden kennen als getrainde ‘honden’ hun plaats. Dit heet men musiceren op hoog niveau. Martin Barre krijgt voldoende ruimte om zijn sublieme gitaarwerk te plaatsen en drummer Doane Perry houdt samen met bassist David Goodier het geheel in de maat. Toetsenman en accordeonist John O’Hara, die al met Ian samenwerkte op ‘Rupi’s Dance’, zorgt voor de gepaste inkleding en versieringen. Ondertussen worden alle fans op hun wenken bediend door middel van een mooie compilatie van hun repertoire. ‘Living In The Past’, ‘Thick As A Brick’ (in een verkorte versie), ‘Bourée’, om maar enkele te noemen. Toch liggen niet alle songs zo voor de hand. Zoals ‘America’ of ‘Pastime With Good Company (King Henry’s Madrigal) bijvoorbeeld. Meest indrukwekkend was de orkestrale versie van Aqualung, die meer weg had van de versie uit ‘Ian Anderson Plays The Orchestral Jethro Tull’ uit 2005 dan van het origineel uit 1971. Er werden ook enkele songs gespeeld uit solo albums: “The Water Carrier†uit ‘The Secret Language Of Birds’ van Ian maar ook “After You, After Me†uit ‘Stage Left’ van Martin.
Na een bijna twee uur durend concert werd als bisnummer nog het overbekende “Locomotive Breath†ten gehore gebracht. De gesprekken in de wandelgangen gingen over de muzikaliteit, de originaliteit en de virtuositeit. Kortom ik denk dat iedereen weer op post zal zijn volgende keer :-).
