The last album of German Poverty’s No Crime had impressed me a lot way back in 2003 and I was anxious to hear how they have evolved musically throughout those four years. And I can assure you, ‘Save my soul’ has not disappointed me.
A short ambient ‘Intro’ marks the beginning of a musical journey full of variation, strong melodies navigating between progressive rock and progressive metal. Perhaps the overall sound is a bit heavier than his predecessors, as can be heard in ‘Open your eyes’, powerful guitars and fast drums remind very much of fellow countrymen of Vanden Plas, even the vocals have the same pitch in this song. The title track continues in the same way, but sounds a bit more melodic, also thanks to the nice keyboards.
‘End in sight’ is also melodic progressive metal with a very catchy guitar riff, most of the tracks are not very long, but the strength of this album lies in song itself and the tight interplay between all musicians: this one is surely one of my favourites on this album.
As on previous albums, the band alternates hard passages with emotional ballads, in ‘Key to creativity’ lead singer Walsemann shows he is one of the better singers of the circuit, a fine acoustic guitar solo completes this fine piece of music.
‚In the wait loop’ is definitely one of the most progressive parts of this album, a strong rhytm sections, bombastic keyboards (mellotron), together with some tempo changes illustrates that the band is also capable to produce music in the vein of Arena or IQ. After the heavier short piece ‚Torture’ the boys show their technical abilities in the instrumental ‚Spellbound’, refererring more to bands like Dream Theater. After a more rock orientated song From the distance (read AOR), the album comes to its conclusion by the epic ‚Break The Spell’ of about 10 minutes, a worthy ending where all ingredients of the album are concentrated into one song.
Without any doubt, ‘Poverty’s no crime’ has delivered once more a top class progressive metal album, they deserve a lot more recognition than they have received until now. Hopefully, this album will be the turning point for the band.

Het laatste album van het Duitse Poverty’s No Crime heeft in 2003 een grote indruk op me nagelaten en ik was dan ook zeer benieuwd hoe ze muzikaal geëvolueerd waren gedurende de voorbij vier jaar. Ik kan jullie verzekeren dat ‘Save my soul’ mij helemaal niet teleurgesteld heeft.
Een korte ambient ‘Intro’ is het begin van een gevarieerde muzikale trip, sterke melodieën die het midden houden tussen progressieve rock en progressieve metal. Misschien is de ‘overall sound’ een beetje heavier dan zijn voorgangers, zoals bijvoorbeeld in ‘Open your eyes’, krachtig gitaarwerk en snelle drums doen me vaak denken aan hun landgenoten van Vanden Plas, zelfs de zang heeft dezelfde pitch in deze song. De titelsong slaat dezelfde weg in, maar klinkt alvast wat melodieuzer, ook en vooral dankzij de uitstekende keyboards.
‘End in sight’ is ook melodieuze progressive metal met een catchy gitaar riff, de meeste tracks duren niet zo lang, maar de kracht van dit album ligt in de songs zelf en het samenspel tussen de muzikanten: deze song is alvast één van mijn favorieten op dit album.
Zoals op de vorige albums, alterneert de groep harde passages met emotionele ballads, in ‘Key to creativity’ toont lead singer Walsemann dat hij één van de betere zangers van het circuit is, een mooie akoestische gitaarsolo maakt dit muziekstukje compleet.
‚In the wait loop’ behoort duidelijk tot de meest progressieve delen van het album, een sterke ritmesectie, bombastische keyboards (mellotron), tezamen met een aantal tempowisselingen illustreert dat de groep ook in staat is om muziek te produceren in de stijl Arena of IQ. Na het heavy maar korte ‚Torture’ tonen de jongens hun technische vaardigheden in het instrumentale ‚Spellbound’, verwijzend naar groepen als Dream Theater. Na een meer rock geïnspireerde From the distance (lees eerder AOR) eindigt het album met de epic ‚Break The Spell’ van ongeveer 10 minuten, een waardig einde waarin alle ingrediënten van het album nog eens geconcentreerd worden in één song.
Zonder twijfel heeft ‘Poverty’s no crime’ opnieuw een klasse progressive metal album afgeleverd, ze verdienen heel wat meer erkenning dan ze tot nu toe gekregen hebben. Hopelijk wordt dit album het keerpunt in hun muzikale carrière.
