THROWDOWN: Venom & Tears

The American Throwdown is a new name for me, but the Orange County based band appears to be around since 1997 and they released four albums before. On ‘Venom & Tears’ they move further towards a general metal approach. Early works of this straight edge outfit have been mainly popular in the hardcore scene. Yet I still label the music on ‘Venom & Tears’ as proper metalcore, mainly because of the vocals of Dave Peters.
Especially one band crossed my mind as point of reference and that is Pantera. Fans of these ‘Cowboys From Hell’ should really check out this record. In general I would describe these thirteen compact songs on ‘Venom & Tears’ as modern metal with lashings of energy and an agreeable groove. It says a lot that the band has toured with the Ozzfest package; it is muscular American core metal appealing to a juvenile audience. This album – produced by Mudrock (Avenged Sevenfold, Godsmack) – only includes one acoustic fragment (with the uncomfortable title ‘Cancer’), but it also offers excellent (brief) guitar soloing in ‘Holy Roller’ and ‘Propaganda’. The latter song is a Sepultura cover, but you have to be attentive because it is not on every edition/version. ‘S.C.U.M.’ on the other hand, is a very fast punky song, going back to the roots. My tip to listen to is the title track. Those who want to check out this contemporary mixture, inspired by bands such as Machine Head, Sepultura, Pantera and early Metallica, can do this at the myspace site of the band www.myspace.com/throwdown

Het Amerikaanse Throwdown is een nieuwe naam voor me, maar de band uit Orange County blijkt al te bestaan sinds 1997 en bracht eerder vier albums uit. Op ‘Venom & Tears’ evolueren zij nog meer in de richting van metal. Het vroegere werk van deze straight edgers blijkt namelijk vooral populair geweest te zijn in hardcore middens. Toch vind ik de muziek op ‘Venom & Tears’ nog wel degelijk metalcore, vooral te wijten aan de vocalen van Dave Peters.
Er is vooral één band die me te binnen schiet als vergelijkingspunt en dat is Pantera. Fans van de ‘Cowboys From Hell’ moeten dit schijfje dus zeker eens onderzoeken. Algemeen zou ik de dertien compacte nummers op ‘Venom & Tears’ vooral willen beschrijven als moderne metal met heel veel energie en een aangename groove. Dat de band deel uitmaakte van het Ozzfest zegt genoeg, het is gespierde Amerikaanse core metal die een jeugdig publiek aanspreekt. Het door Mudrock (Avenged Sevenfold, Godsmack) geproduceerde album bevat slechts één akoestisch stukje (met de ongemakkelijke titel ‘Cancer’), maar biedt de luisteraar in ‘Holy Roller’ en ‘Propaganda’ ook voortreffelijke (beknopte) gitaarsolo’s. Dit laatste is trouwens een Sepultura cover die niet op elke versie te vinden is, let daar even op. ‘S.C.U.M.’ is dan weer een erg snel punkachtig nummer, dat nog even terugkeert naar de basis. Mijn luistertip is het titelnummer. Wie dit eigentijdse brouwsel, geïnspireerd door bands als Machine Head, Sepultura, Pantera en vroege Metallica eens wilt checken, kan ook terecht op de myspace site van de band www.myspace.com/throwdown
