As of the start of the new year, the stream of new albums at Indie Recordings gets going again. We are quick to seize our chance, since the Norwegian label has become the epicentre of the most accomplished artists from Norway and vicinity in the last years. As first one we welcome In Vain and it appears to be a stunner right away. In Vain once was the first band signed by Indie ever and after listening to their second album ‘Mantra’ I understand why. It may be extreme metal, yet relished with softer, melancholic parts, progressive turns and momentarily very melodious. The first album ‘The Latter Rain’ was already regaled with a large number of guest musicians and the use of cello, saxophone and special percussion. On ‘Mantra’ we hear Kjetil Nordhus and Jan Transeth (from the circle of friends In The Woods/Green Carnation) again.
In Vain was founded in 2003 by vocalist A. Frigstad and guitarist J. Haaland. The first EPs ‘Will The Sun Ever Rise’ and ‘Wounds’ caused a wave of praising reviews. The real debut ‘The Latter Rain’ came out in 2007 and was followed by a tour with Vreid. The writing- and recording process of ‘Mantra’ was rather difficult, but the result is staggering. What are the characteristics of In Vain? Differential vocals: a scream-like blackish variant which reminds me of Solstafir and this is mainly used during rigorous postrock intermezzos; clean, soothing vocals adding a melancholic zest to the calmer parts and thirdly also low-pitched grunts. The compositions are long and include sudden turns, from merciless heaviness to tranquil beauty on classic piano or acoustic guitar. All is enriched with soaring keyboards in the background. But what struck me most of all during extensive tracks like ‘Captivating Solitude’ and ‘Mannefall’ are the magnificent, nearly gracious guitar skills. ‘Ain’t No Living’ on the other hand, is a sudden escape into bluesy areas. It is a kind of introduction to ’On The Banks Of Mississippi’. It is exceptional to meet with a Norwegian band singing about the United States, but this anthem makes my flesh creep. It begins with clean harmony vocals, goes on with rough vocals and later on it verges to an In The Woods composition. That captivating, desperate feel is surely present! Via beautiful guitar soloing it goes in crescendo towards a grand apotheosis. ‘Dark Prophets, Black Hearts’ is a straight forward fast song, initially with hoarse Motorhead-alike vocals, but it has again a sudden turn, with a symphonic part and sonorous acoustic guitar sounds.
Get ready for another highlight and strangely enough it deals with America again. ‘Wyakin’ is an ode to the Pacific Northwest US. A mysterious tale of the elder is followed by jeremiad chants. The title ‘mantra’ makes sense in this song. There are sturdy choirs, followed by an extremely compelling lead vocal part. This is catchy! Nice guitar work with momentum in postrock style and wavering piano notes lead to a cinematic occlusion. This is a masterpiece! ‘Circle Of Agony’ sticks to contrasts between heavy riffs with low grunts and soaring melancholy. The occluding eleven minutes long ‘Sombre Fall, Burdened Winter’ evolves from quiescent piano to mid-paced riffs. Again I think of Solstafir in the heavier parts, although the next solo is fluttering and floating. Like always: a perfect balance between booming metal and introvert reveries. As bonus track we have a version of the folk classic ‘Wayfaring Stranger’, it is rendered in a very emotional manner. Goose-bumps!

Met ingang van het nieuwe jaar komt de stroom nieuwe albums bij Indie Recordings terug op gang. Daar zijn we als de kippen bij, want het Noorse label heeft zich de laatste jaren ontwikkeld als epicentrum van de meest getalenteerde muzikanten uit Noorwegen en omgeving. Als eerste verwelkomen we In Vain en dat is meteen een klepper die me van mijn stoel blaast. In Vain was ooit de eerste band die getekend werd door Indie en na beluistering van hun tweede studioalbum ‘Mantra’ begrijp ik waarom. Dit mag dan extreme metal zijn, maar verfraaid met zachtere, weemoedige stukken, progressieve wendingen en bij momenten uiterst melodieus. Het eerste album ‘The Latter Rain’ werd al naar grotere hoogte gestuwd door inbreng van een groot aantal gastmuzikanten en gebruik van cello, saxofoon en speciale percussie. Ook op ‘Mantra’ horen we Kjetil Nordhus en Jan Transeth (uit het clubje van In the Woods/Green Carnation).

Wat zijn de kenmerken van In Vain? Differentiële zang: een schreeuwerige blackish variant die me aan Solstafir doet denken en vooral gebruikt wordt tijdens de rigoureuze postrock intermezzo’s; cleane, zalvende zang die de zachtere momenten een weemoedig tintje geeft en ook nog lage grunts. De composities zijn lang en hebben plotse overgangen van meedogenloos doorrammen, naar verstilde pracht op klassieke piano of akoestische gitaar. Alles wordt op de achtergrond verrijkt met zweverige toetsen. Wat me in lange tracks als ‘Captivating Solitude’ en ‘Mannefall’ echter het meest opvalt, is het prachtige, haast sierlijke gitaarwerk. ‘Ain’t No Living’ is dan plots een bluesy stukje dat een inleiding vormt voor ‘On The Banks Of Mississippi’. Het is uitzonderlijk dat een Noorse band over de Verenigde Staten zingt, maar dit pleidooi bezorgt me kippenvel. Het begint met cleane samenzang, vervolgt met ruwe zang en heeft later veel weg van een In The Woods compositie. Dat beklijvende, wanhopige zit er volledig in. Via een prachtige gitaarsolo gaat dit in crescendo naar een grandioze apotheose. ‘Dark Prophets, Black Hearts’ is daarop een doorrammend nummer met schorre Motorhead vocalen aanvankelijk, maar heeft ook een plotse kentering, met een simfonisch stuk en heldere akoestische gitaarklanken.
Maak je klaar voor een volgend hoogtepunt en vreemd genoeg gaat dit weer over Amerika. ‘Wyakin’ is een ode aan de Pacific Northwest US. Een mysterieuze vertelling van een ouderling gevolgd door jammerende zang leiden dit in. Hier is de titel mantra het meest van toepassing. Er zijn kloeke koren, gevolgd door een bijzonder meeslepende solozang. Dit is catchy! Prachtig stuwend gitaarwerk in postrock stijl en aarzelende pianoklanken leiden naar een filmisch besluit. Dit is een meesterwerk! ‘Circle Of Agony’ houdt zich aan een contrast tussen harde riffs met lage grunts en zweverige melancholie. Het afsluitende elf minuten durende ‘Sombre Fall, Burdened Winter’ gaat van rustige pianoklanken naar mediumtempo riffs. Ook hier denk ik aan Solstafir in de heftige stukken, al is de gitaarsolo die volgt uitwaaierend en zweverig. Zoals steeds een perfecte balans tussen loeiharde metal en ingetogen mijmeringen. Als bonustrack is er een versie van de folk klassieker ‘Wayfaring Stranger’ die op een bijzonder emotionele manier gebracht wordt. Kippenvel!
