ASPERA: Ripples

One might read in the music press that the oldies still close the evening as headliner on festivals and that there are no new candidates to pass the torch. That’s when Aspera comes in sight: five youngsters from Norway that seemingly grew up on a diet of Dream Theater, Symphony X and Fate’s Warning. On their debut album ‘Ripples’ these young guys – hardly twenty - present themselves as technical skilled musicians with a good feel for fetching melodies.
They started as Illusion with three EPs and soon their name was spread by doing as much gigs as possible. That name was eventually changed into Aspera. It brought them even more luck, since they could support diverse-labelled compatriots like Pagan’s Mind, Circus Maximus and Audrey Horne. Supporting Tarja Turunen abroad was one of the highlights until now.
In addition, this euphonious sounding ‘Ripples’ was recorded in their own studio, though it needs to be mentioned that top producer Jens Bogren (Fascination Street Studios) will have helped to achieve this final superior sound. The quite long compositions brim with progressive runs, broad keyboard parts (also organ, just listen to the title track) and introvert classical piano fragments. On the other hand, guitars do have an important function. One time by chunky riffing (this has the nearest approach to Dream Theater when they cut loose) and the other time with magnificent, emotive guitar solos of Robin Ognedal (goose-bumps during ‘Remorse’ and ‘Between Black & White’ – the latter one is my favourite). Atle Pettersen’s vocals are powerful and quite high ranged, sometimes with a raucous, nearly scream-like timbre. He convinces in contemplative parts as well as in between the instrumental tour de forces of his mates. Vocals are also the peace-bringing factor on this album. This is due to the contemplative theme of this album: everything you do has consequences, either in the world or on a personal level. This results in thoughtful lyrics, easy to interpret by every one. They use many smooth harmony vocals in the background. Every song has the same high level and consequently you have almost an hour of excellent progressive metal of a seminal band in your hands with ‘Ripples’. If justice will be done, they will climb slowly yet resolute to the top of the genre.

In de muziekpers lees je wel eens dat de “oudjes” nog steeds de avond afsluiten als knaller op festivals en dat er geen jonge garde voorhanden is om de fakkel over te nemen. En dan duikt Aspera op: vijf jonge snaken uit Noorwegen bij wie Dream Theater, Symphony X en Fate’s Warning blijkbaar met de paplepel ingegoten is. Op hun debuut ‘Ripples’ presenteren deze jongelingen – amper twintig – zich als technisch bekwame muzikanten die bovendien een goed oor hebben voor pakkende melodieën.
Ze begonnen als Illusion met drie ep’s en hun naam ging al spoedig als een lopend vuurtje in het rond door hun talrijke concerten. Die naam werd echter veranderd in Aspera. Dit bracht hen nog meer geluk, want zonder label of album op zak openden ze reeds voor diverse landgenoten als Pagan’s Mind, Circus Maximus en Audrey Horne. Tarja Turunen supporten in het buitenland was een voorlopig hoogtepunt.
Bovendien is dit welklinkende ‘Ripples’ opgenomen in de eigen studio, al moeten we erbij vermelden dat producer suprème Jens Bogren (Fascination Street Studios) wel gezorgd zal hebben voor het uiteindelijke superieure geluid. De vrij lange composities zitten vol progressieve loopjes, brede toetsenpartijen (ook orgel, luister maar naar het titelnummer) en ingetogen klassieke pianostukjes. Gitaren spelen echter ook een belangrijke rol, zij het door de moddervette riffs (als ze gas geven is Dream Theater héél dichtbij) en door prachtige gitaarsolo’s van Robin Ognedal die meer dan eens heel emotioneel zijn (kippenvel tijdens ‘Remorse’ en vooral ‘Between Black & White’ wat mijn favoriet is). De zang van Atle Pettersen is krachtig en vrij hoog, zij het soms met een ruw, bijna schreeuwerig timbre. Hij overtuigt zowel in de vele beschouwende stukken als tussen de instrumentale krachtpatserij van zijn maten. De zang is ook de factor die rust brengt op dit album. Dit is te wijten aan het beschouwende thema van dit album: alles wat je doet heeft gevolgen, hetzij op persoonlijk vlak of zelfs in de wereld. Dit leidt tot contemplatieve zinsneden waar iedereen zich in zal vinden. Bovendien wordt er veel gebruik gemaakt van gladde koortjes op de achtergrond. Elk nummer haalt hetzelfde hoog niveau en dus heb je met ‘Ripples’ gewoon bijna een uur uitstekende progressieve metal van een veelbelovende band in huis, die – als gerechtigheid geschiedt – langzaam maar zeker zal opklimmen naar de top van het genre.
