ECHOES OF ETERNITY: As Shadows Burn

Echoes Of Eternity is a Los Angeles based metal band founded in 2006 by long time friends Brandon Patton and Kirk Carrison. The idea of mixing American thrash metal and European female-fronted gothic metal looks interesting and innovative. Unfortunately a good idea is not enough to deliver a fine album. This second album by Echoes Of Eternity simply lacks challenging, surprising and catchy songs. There is not one single song that can hold your attention (maybe the final track is a bit more exciting and interesting than the rest). But most of the other songs are mediocre.
Also the sound is very synthetic and sterile. The production is too thin and doesn’t give the power the songs require. Fine musicians? Absolutely. An interesting front-woman? Sure. But unfortunately a poor album. Intensive touring with Symphony X, Edguy and Trail Of Tears surely made the band sound heavier, but without great songs, no great album. A lot of things have to change before Echoes Of Eternity will be part of the leading bands in the progressive metal genre. “As Shadows Burn” has its moment, but as a whole, the result is disappointing.

Echoes Of Eternity is een progressieve metal band uit Los Angeles. De band werd opgericht in 2006 door de heren Patton en Carrison. De band brengt een mix van Amerikaanse thrash metal en Europese gothic metal. Op zich best een leuk, interessant en origineel idee. Maar als je echter vergeet originele en spannende nummers te schrijven, dan blijf je enkel achter met een lege doos vol goede ideeën en een pover album. Het album biedt gewoon te weinig goede nummers. De songs zijn niet echt slecht, maar er is geen enkel nummer dat er bovenuit steekt en het album naar een hoger niveau kan tillen. (al is het afsluitende ‘Funeral In The Sky’ iets progressiever en zonder twijfel het beste nummer op de cd).
Ook het geluid van deze cd klinkt erg steriel en synthetisch. De productie is te dun en het geluid mist warmte en diepte. Technisch gezien wordt er aardig gespeeld en de stem van de Canadese frontvrouw Francine Boucher is ook niet echt slecht, maar toch kon dit album mij maar matig boeien. De songs dagen je niet uit, verrassen nergens en zijn gewoon te middelmatig. De band toerde intensief met Symphony X, Edguy en Trail Of Tears, waardoor dit tweede album iets harder klinkt dat hun debuut. Toch zullen de leden van Echoes Of Eternity nog veel boterhammen moeten eten om in het koppeloton van de progressieve metal te mogen spelen. “As Shadows Burn” heeft zijn momenten, maar stelt toch teleur. Jammer.
