First thing that caught my eye after comparison with their previous work ‘The Perfect Machine’ - which I reviewed at the end of 2005 - was that only guitar virtuoso Olaf Thorsen (founder of the band) and vocalist Michele Luppi (made his entrance after the departure of Fabio Lione, of Rhapsody (Of Fire) fame), are over from the previous line-up. But no cock will crow about it for both musicians determine the sound of Vision Divine.
They know how to surround themselves with skilled newcomers and it all resulted in a proper album in the lines of the illustrious predecessor. There is once again a concept, based on the diary of the same man who had a prominent role in the ‘Stream Of Consciousness’ album. Fans may emerge into a kind of familiar sequelled theme and in this respect it can be compared with people who follow a kind of serial on television. Sound and vision blend into one experience.
But okay, as music site we go a bit deeper into those musical efforts and these are once again focused on the duo Thorsen/Luppi. For the eminent guitar skills as well as the prominent vocals remains the trademark of Vision Divine. This includes that hectic power metal with exciting vocals is intermittent with introvert passages to keep things engrossing. It may be a safe formula to satisfy power metal fans as well as progressive aficionados. One may summarize that the first part of the album includes the fastest parts with flashing guitar skills and from the sixth song on they start to insert some quieter intermezzos. No point in going into details, for Vision Divine knows how to create a perfect symmetry between overwhelming parts and sentimental interludes. I preferred ‘The Perfect Machine’ just a little bit more, but it does not prevent us from saying that ‘The 25th Hour’ remains a recommended release for fans of vigorous symphonic power metal in Italian tradition.

Het eerste wat me opviel na vergelijking met hun vorig werkje ‘The Perfect Machine’ - dat ik eind 2005 beschreef - is dat enkel gitaarvirtuoos Olaf Thorsen (de stichter van de band) en zanger Michele Luppi (kwam aanwaaien na het vertrek van Fabio Lione, u allen welbekend van Rhapsody (Of Fire)), nog over zijn van die vorige bezetting. Geen haan die er naar zal kraaien want beide muzikanten bepalen immers het geluid van Vision Divine.
Ze weten zich te omringen door uiterst kundige nieuwkomers die van ‘The 25th Hour’ een album gemaakt hebben die in het verlengde ligt van de voorganger. Er is zelfs weer een concept, dat gebaseerd is op het dagboek van dezelfde man die de hoofdrol speelde in het ‘Stream Of Consciousness’ album. De fans kunnen zich dus weer verdiepen in een min of meer vertrouwd thema dat een uitbreiding krijgt en als dusdanig aansluit op mensen die op tv een vervolgverhaal tot in de puntjes willen uitdiepen.
Maar goed, als muzieksite gaan we even dieper in op de muzikale capriolen, en deze zijn evenzo gecentreerd rond het duo Thorsen/Luppi. Want het overweldigende gitaarwerk alsook de prominente vocalen blijven het handelsmerk van Vision Divine. Dit betekent dat jachtige power metal met geëxciteerde vocalen wordt afgewisseld met fragmenten waar de band even gas terugneemt om alles overzichtelijk te houden. Een veilige formule om zowel de power metal fans als de progressievere ban te blijven boeien. Je zou kunnen samenvatten dat het eerste deel van dit album de energieke stukken bevat met veel flitsend gitaarwerk om zo omstreeks het zesde nummer toch wel wat rustpunten in te bouwen. Details zijn hierbij overbodig, daar Vision Divine de knop perfect weet om te draaien van “kan het nog sneller†naar enig sentiment. Persoonlijk vond ik ‘The Perfect Machine’ net iets meer diepgang hebben dan ‘The 25th Hour’ maar dit weerhoudt ons niet om te stellen dat ‘The 25th Hour’ nog steeds een aanrader is voor fans van energieke symfonische power metal in de Italiaanse traditie.
