Shock rocker Rob Zombie released in 1998 his first solo CD ‘Hellbilly Deluxe’. This debut album scored three times platinum in The United States Of America. It now looks like Zombie wants to repeat this trick with his latest ‘Hellbilly Deluxe part two’. Unfortunately Zombie seems to be running out of musical inspiration. This new release just sounds a little bit less original and adventurous. Of course, Zombie can’t make a really bad album and all the shock rock elements that create that typical Zombie sound are all in here, but just a little less surprising and sparkling. We hear spoken word fragments out of non existing science fiction b-movies, surf guitars from cult movies (Tarantino is often just around the corner), beating drums, metal riffs and lots of sex and horror.
But since Zombie turned into a full time horror movie director his musical output has been less spectacular and ground breaking. However, if you want to impress your girlfriend or the female hitch hiker that just stepped into your car, then some Zombie music can do miracles. Put on some Zombie sleaze rock and your partner will either be scared to death or start to undress. In everyone of us there is some Tarantino and next to Manson there might be some space left in your record collection for a new release by this former White Zombie front man. But if Zombie wants us to buy his next release he has to come up with something more spectacular than this one. If not, he might first grab an Oscar for best movie before winning a Grammy for best album.

Shockrocker Rob Zombie bracht in 1998 zijn eerste solo album uit ‘Hellbilly Deluxe’. De cd haalde in de Verenigde Staten drie maal platina. Kassa, kassa. Met dit ‘deel 2’ lijkt het wel of Zombie dit huzarenstukje wil overdoen. Alleen ontbreekt het hem dit maal wel aan inspiratie. Niet dat dit een slecht album is. We krijgen alle vertrouwde Zombie ingrediënten: stukjes gesproken dialogen uit fictieve sciencefiction films, scheurende surfgitaren uit cultfilms, de nodige portie seks, pompende beats en metal riffs en natuurlijk flink wat horror. Want griezelen is de full time bezigheid van deze voormalige White Zombie voorman. Sinds Zombie zich bijna volledig op het regisseren van horrorfilms heeft toegelegd, lijkt zijn muzikale pen toch wat droog te staan en wordt zijn muzikale kwaliteitsspoeling steeds dunner. Natuurlijk maakt Zombie geen slechte plaat. En wie houdt van een flinke portie shockrock is ook nu weer bij Rob aan het juiste adres. Alleen vinden we het dit keer toch allemaal wat minder.
Wil je echter indruk maken op de jonge wulpse liftster die je net hebt meegenomen en tracht je haar zo snel mogelijk de stuipen op het lijf te jagen door te pochen met een flinke dosis seks en horror, dan kan deze nieuwe Zombie release wonderen doen. Ook een snelle striptease behoort steeds tot de mogelijkheden als de dame in kwestie ingaat op Zombie’s teksten. In ieder van ons schuilt wel een kleine Tarantino en naast Manson is best nog een plaatsje vrij in je cd rek voor Rob. Toch zal Zombie uit een origineler vaatje moeten tappen wil hij onze vriend blijven. Ondertussen stap ik in mijn auto, gooi wat Zombie door de boxen en wacht op een wulpse deerne. Als Rob op dit muzikale pad doorgaat voorspel ik hem eerder een Oscar voor beste film dan een Grammy voor beste album.
