AMARAN'S PLIGHT: Voice in the Light

Amaran’s Plight is not the first “super group†and certainly won’t be the last. Some combinations have worked out fine, in the past, others didn’t, but this one results in a very fine progmetal album, the best I heard so far this year.
The Musicians
Gary Wehrkamp (Shadow Gallery) and DC Cooper (Silent Force) already worked together on the Shadow Gallery album ‘Tyranny’. Nick D’Virgilio is known as drummer of Spock’s Beard and can be heard on various other projects. The only unknown to most prog fans is probably Kurt Barabas from Under The Sun, also one of the Magna Carta bands.
The Concept
Voice in the Light is the journey into a man’s life and the mystery surrounding his near death experience. As a teenager, he falls into an icy lake and dies. He receives a mysterious message from the other side, which manifests itself later in his life. He has to make several difficult decisions. However, his last decision turns out to be a miraculous, supernatural twist of fate that will change the world forever. (source ProgRock records)
The Music
It’s not often the music fits so well into the story, or is it vice versa? Every emotion in the story is easy to find in the music. The best song, Incident at Haldeman’s Lake, an eleven minute epic, is the best example. You can feel the happiness in the beginning, the chaos of the drowning in the middle and the revival at the end. And every musician is playing at his highest level. This music really reveals how good Nick d’Virgilio really is.
The combination of the melodic, easy accessible choruses that remind me a lot of Shadow Gallery and the more complex instrumental pieces in between, works unbelievably fine. With names like DC Cooper and Nick D’Virgilio in the line-up, I don’t I have to tell you how great the vocals sound. And if that doesn’t convince you, there are also a few guest vocals: Trishia O’Keefe, a very talented singer, who lifts ‘I Promise’ above the level of a simple ballad, which it would have been without her and of course there’s Michael Sadler from Saga, another great voice.
Conclusion
Although there’s nothing new under the sun, every possible cliché of progmetal is used here; the quality is very high and makes it worthwhile to give it a listen. As I said in the beginning, this is the best progmetal album of this year so far.

Amaran’s Plight is niet de eerste supergroep en zal zeker niet de laatste zijn. Sommige combinaties werkten goed in het verleden, andere dan weer niet, maar deze samenwerking resulteert in een prachtig progmetal album, voor mij het beste van dit jaar, voorlopig.
De muzikanten
Gary Wehrkamp (Shadow Gallery) en DC Cooper (Silent Force) werkten al eerder samen op het Shadow Gallery album ‘Tyranny’. Nick D’Virgilio is bekend als drummer van Spock’s Beard en is ook nog te horen op talrijke andere projecten. De enige onbekende voor de meeste progfans is waarschijnlijk Kurt Barabas van Under The Sun, één van de Magna Carta groepen uit dezelfde periode als Shadow Gallery.
Het Concept
Voice in the Light is de reis in het leven van een man en het mysterie rond zijn bijna doodservaring. Als tiener valt hij in een bevroren meer en sterft. Hij krijgt een geheimzinnige boodschap van de ‘andere kant’, die zich later tijdens zijn leven uit. Hij moet talrijke belangrijke, moeilijke beslissingen nemen. En toch blijkt zijn laatste beslissing een wonderbaarlijke, bovennatuurlijke wijziging die de wereld voorgoed zal veranderen.
De Muziek
Het gebeurt niet dikwijls dat de muziek zo goed aansluit bij het verhaal, of is het vice versa? Elke emotie uit het verhaal kan je gemakkelijk terugvinden in de muziek. Het beste nummer, een epos van elf minuten, is het beste voorbeeld. Je voelt het geluk in het begin, de chaos van het verdrinken in het middenstuk en de verrijzenis aan het einde. Iedere muzikant geeft het allerbeste van zijn talent. Deze muziek toont ook aan hoe goed Nick d’Virgilio is.
De combinatie van de melodieuze, gemakkelijk toegankelijke refreinen, die me vooral doen denken aan Shadow Gallery en de meer complexe instrumentale stukken daartussen, werkt ongelooflijk goed. Met namen als DC Cooper en Nick D’Virgilio in je rangen, hoef ik niet te vertellen hoe goed de stemmen klinken. En als dat je nog niet overtuigt, dan zijn er nog enkele gastvocalisten: Trishia O’Keefe, een zeer getalenteerde zangeres, die ‘I Promise’ boven het niveau van een simpele ballad, waar het op afstevende voor zij begon te zingen, verheft en dan is er ook nog Michael Sadler van Saga, nog zo’n megastem.
Conclusie
Hoewel er niets nieuws onder de zon is, want elke mogelijke cliché uit de progmetal wordt gebruikt, blijft het de moeite waard om te beluisteren, door de hoge kwaliteit. En zoals reeds eerder vermeld, dit is, in mijn opinie, voorlopig het beste progmetal album van dit jaar.
