MORTEMIA: Misere Mortem

Morten Veland’s name should ring a bell as he was a member of Tristania and founder of Sirenia. This Norwegian musician started a new project, Mortemia, and now released its first album “Misere Mortem’, on which he is doing everything. He plays all instruments, does the vocals (except the choir), wrote the songs and produced, engineered and mixed the album.
He stepped away from all of the latest gothic metal releases, who work with the formula of ‘the beauty and the beast’. (Read: a male screamer and a female angelic voice) He replaced the female vocals by a choir and used some other classical influences, to create a new gothic metal sound. Or should I say, he returned to what the gothic metal was all about in the beginning?
The choir is from France comprised by Damian Surian, Mathieu Landdry, Emmanuelle Zoldan and Sandrine Gouttebel. The sound and harmony of this choir can be compared to the Gregorian choirs on classical albums. They can also apply for a job with Therion.
The combination of Morten’s dirty voice and the classical vocals and music is working great and gives the music an even darker touch. Morten’s guitar is both with great riffs and very melodic solos very much in front. What a difference with his previous bands. And a great guitar player he is!!! Just listen to tracks like “The Eye of the Storm” and “The Wheel of Fire” and many others. The combination of classical music and gothic metal works perfect.
I wonder if he will ever bring this live because he will have to search for musicians and the choir won’t be an easy part. But for the moment he calls it a project, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Morten Veland’s naam zou een belletje moeten laten rinkelen, want hij was lid van Tristania en stichter van Sirenia. De Noorse muzikant start nu met een nieuw project, Mortemia, van wie het eerste album, “Misere Mortem’, verschijnt, waarop hij werkelijk alles zelf doet. Hij bespeelde alle instrumenten, deed alle vocalen (behalve het koor), schreef alle nummers en stond in voor de productie, de techniek en de mix van het album.
Om niet te verdwijnen in de massa gothic metalgroepen die overal oprijzen, veranderde hij iets aan de formule van De Schone en het Beest. (lees: een mannelijke schreeuwerd en vrouwelijke engelenzang). Hij verving de vrouwenzang door een koor en gebruikte ook een aantal invloeden uit de klassieke muziek, waardoor een nieuwe gothic metalsound ontstaat. Of beter gezegd, hij keert terug naar waar het juist om draaide bij gothic metal in het begin.
Het koor komt uit Frankrijk en bestaat uit Damian Surian, Mathieu Landdry, Emmanuelle Zoldan en Sandrine Gouttebel. Het geluid en de harmonie van het koor kan je het best vergelijken met Gregoriaanse kerkzang uit de klassieke muziek. Ze moeten dringend eens solliciteren bij Therion.
De combinatie van Morten’s vuile stem en de klassieke zang en muziek werkt wonderwel en geeft de muziek een extra donker randje. Morten’s gitaar staat zowel met prachtige rifs en zeer melodieuze gitaarsolo’s veelvuldig in ‘the picture’. Wat een verschil met zijn vorige groepen. En zijn gitaarspel mag er zeker wezen!!! Luister maar eens naar nummers zoals “The Eye of the Storm” en “The Wheel of Fire” en vele anderen. De combinatie van de klassieke muziek en gothic metal werkt perfect.
Ik vraag mij af of hij dit ooit live zal brengen. Hij zal eerst muzikanten moeten zoeken en ook het koor zal een uitdaging worden. Voor het ogenblik is “Mortemia” een project. Afwachten dus.
