ENGRAINED: Anger, Roots and Rock n Roll EP

Hanover may be famous for most people due to The Scorpions and heavy/power metal; there’s something different going on too. Engrained is already active since 1992, initially as hardcore trio. Their first release was an EP with six songs ‘Capricious’, followed by different underground releases.
Their collaboration to a Hüsker Dü compilation drew my attention. Can they be made of superior mould? We’ll see. Their new EP ‘Anger, Roots & Rock ‘n Roll’ is a brief yet satisfying statement for hardcore allied souls amongst us. Quite simple yet effective. My impression? Engrained cuts loose in fine rock ‘n roll overtones, with quite high-pitched howling vocals of bassist Fenne. The songs are compact and are relished with excellent guitar skills. Drum patterns of times gone by (punk scene), raucous vocals, hacking guitars (‘Leave You Behind’); it is all focused on having a good time and fuck the society on Friday night. As extra they add a Poison Idea cover. ‘Plastic Bomb’ remains close to the original music-wise, only vocally one may detect some differences. Well, this is a piece of cake for hardcore aficionados and it is not bad at all.

Hannover mag voor de meeste mensen bekend zijn omwille van The Scorpions en heavy/power metal, er is ook nog iets anders gaande. Engrained is er al actief sinds 1992, aanvankelijk als hardcore trio. Hun eerste uitgave was een EP met zes nummers ‘Capricious’, daarna brachten ze best wat differentieel spul uit, maar ze bleven een underground band.
Hun deelname aan een Hüsker Dü verzamelaar trekt mijn bijzondere aandacht. Van het goede hout gesneden, weet je wel. Hun nieuwe EP ‘Anger, Roots & Rock ’n Roll’ is een kort maar bevredigend statement voor de hardcore gerichte zieltjes onder ons. Allemaal simpel edoch effectief. Mijn indruk? Engrained rost door in lekkere rock ’n roll met vrij hoge, huilerige vocalen van bassist Fenne; de nummers zijn compact en kunnen bogen op excellent gitaarwerk. Drumpatronen uit lang vervlogen tijden (punk scène), ruwe zang, hakkende gitaren (‘Leave You Behind’); dit staat geheel in het teken van uit je bol te gaan op vrijdagavond. Als extra voegt men er een Poison Idea cover aan toe. ‘Plastic Bomb’ blijft muzikaal erg dicht bij het origineel, alleen vocaal is er enige diversiteit te bespeuren. Voer voor hardcore liefhebbers en niet eens zo slecht.
