VAN CANTO: Tribe of Force

Randamdoo, dubudubudum, dumdidum, rakketakketak. No, this is not childish gibberish but the noises the singers use to imitate heavy metal guitars and sounds. Van Canto is a German a capella metal band with four male vocalists and one female singer. Only the drummer is playing a real instrument.
And I have to admit, they are getting away with it very well. You should really put all prejudices aside and listen to their material. It’s incredible how they can imitate some dazzling guitar solos. The advantage of an a capella band is also that they have some excellent singers in the house. Sly and Inga deliver some of the best vocal performances I heard in a long time.
The production by Charlie Bauernfeind (Blind Guardian) is flawless. Other famous names also helped to lift this album to a higher level. “One to Ten” contains a duel of a vocal guitar solo against a real guitar played by Victor Smolski of Rage, so you can compare the vocal version against the real thing and you will be amazed!
Some other highlights are the vocal harmonies in the ballad “Last Night of the Kings” and “Water. Fire. Heaven. Earth.”, a song that contains a lot of Nightwish references.
My favourites are the two first tracks, “Lost Forever” and “To Sing a Metal Song”, two excellent metal tracks with a high sing-a-long factor.
As on every album, they also perform some fine covers. Especially “Master of Puppets” (Metallica) deserves some admiration, but also the Grave Digger song, “Rebellion” has its moments. You should check out their covers on previous albums of Iron Maiden’s “Fear of the Dark”, Metallica’s “Battery”, Blind Guardian’s “The Bard Song” and “Wishmaster” from Nightwish.
They certainly found a new way of rendering some metal tracks, although the “rakketaks” and the “dumdum’s” tend to get on your nerves after listening too long to this band. But they deserve a high score for trying something new.
"Tribe of Force" will also be available as a strictly limited edition digipack including a bonus DVD of their 65-minute performance at Wacken Open Air 2008, as well as interviews and behind-the-scenes footage.

Randamdoo, dubudubudum, dumdidum, rakketakketak. Neen, dit is geen kindergebrabbel maar de geluiden die de vocalisten van Van Canto gebruiken om heavy metal gitaren en andere geluiden te imiteren. Van Canto is een Duitse a capella groep met vier zangers en één zangeres. Enkel de drummer bespeelt een echt instrument.
En ik moet toegeven dat het resultaat er mag wezen. Je moet echt eens al je vooroordelen aan de kant zetten en eens luisteren naar hun werk. Het is ongelooflijk hoe ze uitstekende gitaarsolo’s weten te imiteren. Het voordeel van een a capella groep is ook dat je meerdere uitstekende zangers in huis hebt. Sly en Inga leveren enkele van de beste vocale prestaties, die ik de laatste tijd hoorde.

Zoals op elk album, spelen ze hier enkele prachtige covers. Vooral “Master of Puppets” (Metallica) verdient een bijzondere vermelding maar ook “Rebellion” van Grave Digger bevat goede momenten. Je moet ook eens luisteren naar de covers op hun vorige albums, zoals Iron Maiden’s “Fear of the Dark”, Metallica’s “Battery”, Blind Guardian’s “The Bard Song” en “Wishmaster” van Nightwish.
Ze hebben in ieder geval een nieuwe manier gevonden om metal muziek weer te geven, hoewel de “rakketaks” en de “dumdum’s” toch een beetje op je zenuwen beginnen te werken als je te lang naar de groep luistert. Maar ze verdienen toch een hoge score om iets nieuws te proberen.
"Tribe of Force" verschijnt ook als ‘strictly limited edition digipack’ met een bonus DVD van hun optreden op Wacken Open Air 2008, en enkele interviews en wat ‘behind-the-scenes materiaal.
