Early 2008 ‘Le Fol’ of Audrey Horne was launched in Europe and most of the reporters unanimously concluded: this was an exceptional surprise! Eye-catcher happens to be Toschie, a man blessed with a characteristic voice, reminiscent of Alice In Chains, Vintersorg or Michael Stipe (REM), that depends on which part of rock music you are familiar with. Despite the presence of an eminence of the black metal scene such as Ice Dale (Enslaved, I), this is far from blackened metal. On the contrary, Audrey Horne writes compelling songs. Call it alternative rock, grunge, hard rock or post rock… it remains very fetching and sublime on more than one level. That is tenable again for the third (self-titled) album.
The news about the talent of this band spread over the world like a wild-fire. Hence they travelled to Los Angeles for this album to work in the JHCO Studios with famous producer Joe Barresi. Fortunately he did not make it too sleek and Audrey Horne kept their identity. I would even say: they matured in finding a personal sound, since I don’t have the need to compare so much with other bands than I did during ‘Le Fol’. Catchiness remained. Toschie writes excellent lyrics with touching one-liners and it doesn’t take long before you instinctively sing along.
‘These Vultures’ is an entry brimming with rousing harmony vocals. Almost serene. The tight sober instrumental support of Toschie’s sure-fire vocals in ‘Charon’ showcases a huge momentum. And in ‘Circus’ it seems as if he sings differently again, a bit snappish. Next to the tense guitars, Hammond organ and Mellotron appear to be another great trump on ‘Audrey Horne’. You can feel the seventies vibe, yet it is an ultra modern record. Sturdy rocking in songs like ‘Blaze Of Ashes’ and ‘Bridges And Anchors’, but captivating during sensitive moments like ‘Down Like Suicide’ or the melancholic ‘Sail Away’ (with marvellous guitar solo!). Vocals and guitars are often distorted, they achieve an atmospheric tinge. Every song is as important as the other when you listen to this album. ‘Godspeed’ is a perfect epilogue, because this emotive song is wonderful and it refers back to the beginning of this record. Keep following this circle for a while, since this record grows and hooks you!

Begin 2008 werd ‘Le Fol’ van Audrey Horne losgelaten op Europa en de meeste reporters met oren aan hun kop oordeelden unaniem: dit was nog eens een grote verrassing! Blikvanger is Toschie, een man gezegend met een karakteristieke stem die afwisselend Alice In Chains, Vintersorg en Michael Stipe (REM) voor de geest haalt, het ligt er maar aan in welk segment van de rockmuziek men zich beweegt. Ondanks de aanwezigheid van een klassenbak uit de black metal scène zoals Ice Dale (Enslaved, I) is dit allesbehalve zwartgeblakerd. Neen, Audrey Horne schrijft aangrijpende rocknummers. Noem het alternatieve rock, grunge, hard rock of post rock… het blijft aanstekelijk en op meerdere vlakken subliem. En dat is ook weer het geval op dit derde (titelloze) album.
Het nieuws over het talent van deze band verspreidde zich als een lopend vuurtje. Voor dit album reisde men dan ook af naar Los Angelos om er te werken in de JHOC-studio met befaamd producer Joe Barresi. Die heeft de plooien gelukkig niet al te glad gestreken en Audrey Horne is zichzelf gebleven. Ik zou zelfs zeggen: gegroeid naar een eigen identiteit, want ik voel minder de neiging om met bands te vergelijken dan tijdens ‘Le Fol’. De toegankelijkheid is gebleven, want omdat Toschie ook goede teksten met rake oneliners schrijft, duurt het niet lang of je zingt mee.
‘These Vultures’ is meteen een entree die bulkt van begeesterde samenzang. Bijna sereen. De strakke sobere begeleiding van Toschie’s sterke zang in ‘Charon’ vertoont toch een enorme stuwkracht. En in ‘Circus’ lijkt zijn stem weer anders te klinken, een beetje snibbig. Buiten de strakke gitaren vormen vooral Hammond orgel en Mellotron een erg sterke troef op ‘Audrey Horne’. Je voelt de jaren zeventig, terwijl dit een ultramoderne plaat is. Stevig rockend in songs zoals ‘Blaze Of Ashes’ en ‘Bridges And Anchors’, maar naar de keel grijpend tijdens sensitieve momenten als ‘Down Like Suicide’ of het melancholieke ‘Sail Away’ (prachtige gitaarsolo!). De zang en ook de gitaren zijn meermaals vervormd, men bewerkstelligt een atmosferisch geluid. Elk nummer hoort er gewoon bij wanneer je dit album beluistert. ‘Godspeed’ is een perfecte epiloog, want dit gevoelige nummer is wondermooi en verwijst terug naar het begin van dit album. Blijf even in cirkels draaien, want deze groeiplaat neemt bezit van je!
