IKUINEN KAAMOS: Fall Of Icons

The eternal polar night (free translation of Ikuinen Kaamos) has known dark, hard times. They left me in awe with their debut ‘The Forlorn’ late 2006, but in spite of this seminal start, the band soon struggled with all kinds of problems. They recorded a second album in 2007, but Descent Productions was one of the labels suffering from financial problems due to the world crisis. Alas, the release in January 2008 did not happen. The band was disappointed, but put three lengthy songs on line as free download, the EP ‘Closure’. Fortunately Maddening Media – a label that earlier surprised me in a positive way – wanted to sign the band to record their next full length album. In May 2009 they entered the studio again and the once more sublime record, called ‘Fall Of Icons’ is the result.
Ongoing problems have taken their toll. From the line-up that created ‘The Forlorn’, only those with perseverance remained. We are talking about guitarists Juhani Mikkonen and Jarno Ruuskanen. Risto Herranen is the new vocalist and he introduced (very beautiful) clean vocals from ‘Closure’ on, so that the musical palette even became richer. Progressive death metal with a jet-black doom injection is still a fine way to describe the music. In the meantime, the band is tired of comparisons with Opeth, but they are impossible to ignore. Readers know enough, I will not mention their name again. Besides, it would not do justice to such a great band to refer to any others as comparison.
One can find five lengthy compositions on ‘Fall Of Icons’ and in every song loads of things happen. They bring your senses in ultimate state of alertness, trying to fathom this abundance of impressions. Yet the music is fluent, mainly due to the opulence of melodious guitar solos, meandering freely through a moon landscape of heavy momentum and moments of fragile tranquillity. Risto is an accomplished vocalist: he shifts from low death growls to a scream-like variant (a wink to the black metal past of the band) and beautiful sonorous vocals. Just as if the band has three singers. The calm passages include many classical guitar patterns and the emotive solos would fit in a progressive rock band as well (think of Riverside). Melancholy is the key word, more than doom, since one will never notice pure inertness. ‘Fall Of Icons’ is a stunner, especially for aficionados of intense music that deserves your devoted attention. I instantly looked for the in-between EP ‘Closure’ and you can also read that review on our site.

De eeuwige poolnacht (vrije vertaling van Ikuinen Kaamos) heeft donkere tijden gekend. Ze bliezen me eind 2006 omver met het debuut ‘The Forlorn’, maar ondanks die veelbelovende start kampte de band daarna met allerlei problemen. Ze namen een tweede album op in 2007, maar Descent Productions was één van de labels waarvoor de financiële crisis in de wereld gevolgen had. Helaas, de release in januari 2008 vond niet plaats. Teleurgesteld zette men dan maar drie lange songs on line als free download, de ep ‘Closure’. Gelukkig wou Maddening Media – een label dat me al eerder aangenaam verrast had - de band tekenen om een volledig album op te nemen. In mei 2009 ging men terug de studio in en het wederom sublieme ‘Fall Of Icons’ is het resultaat.
Aanhoudende problemen hebben hun tol geëist. Van de bezetting die ‘The Forlorn’ maakte, vinden we enkel de doorbijters terug en dat zijn gitaristen Juhani Mikkonen en Jarno Ruuskanen. Risto Herranen is de nieuwe zanger en hij introduceerde ook (fantastisch mooie) cleane vocalen vanaf ‘Closure’, zodat het muzikale palet zelfs nog rijker is geworden. Progressieve death metal met een gitzwarte doominjectie is nog steeds hoe we de muziek kunnen omschrijven. De band is de vergelijkingen met Opeth intussen meer dan beu, maar je kunt er niet omheen. Lezers weten genoeg, ik zal de naam niet meer vernoemen. Het zou de band trouwens tekort doen om eender wie als ijkpunt aan te halen.
Vijf lange composities waarin heel wat gebeurt, vinden we terug op ‘Fall Of Icons’. Ze brengen je zintuigen in opperste staat van alertheid om de veelheid aan indrukken te bevatten. Toch is de muziek vloeiend, en dat komt dan vooral door de vele melodieuze gitaarsolo’s die naar hartenlust meanderen tussen een maanlandschap van stuwende ritmes en momenten van breekbare kalmte. Risto is een begenadigd zanger: hij wisselt lage death growls af met een schreeuwerige variant (een wenk naar het black metal verleden van de band) en mooie heldere zang. ’t Is net of de band drie zangers heeft. De kalme passages bevatten veel klassieke gitaarpatronen en de kalme solo’s passen evenzeer in een progressieve rockband (denk aan Riverside). Melancholie is een sleutelwoord, eerder dan doom want nergens is zuivere inertie te bemerken. ‘Falls Of Icon’ is een prachtplaat, voor liefhebbers van intense muziek die je volle aandacht verdient. Ik ging meteen op zoek naar de tussenliggende ep ‘Closure’ zodat je ook die bespreking weldra kunt lezen.
