BLITZKRIEG: Theatre Of The Damned

This is really heavy metal of the eighties; an album that could have been made during the upcoming boom of new wave of British heavy metal. This is not that odd because Blitzkrieg was founded way back in 1980 and they were pretty successful with their first album ‘A Time Of Changes’ (1985). Next their career got into a blind alley because of several splits and reunions. But anyway, since 2001 Blitzkrieg regularly releases albums again under the impulse of vocalist Brian Ross.
Most metal fans might know this English band (native of Leicester), because the song ‘Blitzkrieg’ was covered by Metallica. It could be found on the ‘Creeping Death’ EP.
‘Theatre Of The Damned’ is the first release on their new label Armageddon and includes ten uncomplicated metal songs on which you start headbanging spontaneously. Most of the songs are medium-paced and very melodic, due to the excellent (twin)guitar skills of Ken Johnson and Guy Laverick. The voice of Brian Ross lacks bit of strength from time to time, but he perfectly fits into the whole picture. Lyrics are quite cliché, telling brief horror stories, though they go a bit deeper now and then, for example in the best song of the album ‘Into The Light’, which is preceded by a beautiful instrumental fragment. It deals with a human being at the crossroads of life and death. ‘Into The Light’ reminds me a bit of ‘Fade To Black’ of Metallica, while vocals of ‘Tortured Souls’ are reminiscent to Ozzy. This is an album without fringes that will appeal to fans of time-honoured metal. Biff of Saxon, a long term metal icon himself, co-produced the album.
As bonus tracks, the old classics ‘Armageddon’ and ‘Blitzkrieg’ are added and these learn that the band used to play faster and fiercer in the past. Bonus videos are present as well, from ‘Escape From The Village’ and ‘I’m Not Insane’. A solid middle class album without surprises or disappointments.

Dit is echt jaren tachtig metal; een album dat zo uit had kunnen komen in de opkomende boom van new wave of British heavy metal. Gek is dit niet want Blitzkrieg werd al opgericht in 1980 en had behoorlijk wat succes met hun eerste album ‘A Time Of Changes’ (1985). Daarna is hun carrière een beetje in het slop geraakt doordat ze maar liefst vijf maal gesplit zijn en later terug bij elkaar kwamen. Maar goed, sinds 2001 brengt Blitzkrieg onder de stuwende kracht van zanger Brian Ross geregeld albums uit.
De meeste metalfans zullen deze Engelse band (uit Leicester) kennen doordat het nummer ‘Blitzkrieg’ gecoverd werd door Metallica. We konden het vinden op de ‘Creeping Death’ EP.

De meeste nummers zijn mediumtempo en erg melodieus, iets wat op conto te schrijven is van het uitstekende (twin)gitaarwerk van Ken Johnson en Guy Laverick. De stem van Brian Ross mist een beetje kracht soms, maar hij past wel goed in het plaatje. De teksten staan bol van de clichés en vertellen beknopte horrorverhalen, al gaat men ook wel eens dieper, zoals in het beste nummer ‘Into The Light’ dat voorafgegaan wordt door een fraai instrumentaal stukje. ‘Into The Light’ doet me trouwens aan ‘Fade To Black’ denken van Metallica, terwijl de vocalen in ‘Tortured Souls’ wat weg hebben van Ozzy. Dit is een album zonder poeha dat geknipt is voor fans van ouderwetse metal. Biff van Saxon, zelf een metal icoon die al jaren meegaat, deed de coproductie.
Als bonus zijn de ouwe kaskrakers ‘Armageddon’ en ‘Blitzkrieg’ toegevoegd en die leren ons dat de band vroeger toch wat feller klonk. Bonus video’s zijn er ook, van ‘Escape From The Village’ en ‘I’m Not Insane’. Een degelijke middenmoter die niet verrast maar ook niet teleurstelt.
