With nostalgia I got the live album ‘Thank You’ in my hands in 2002 and I wrote a spontaneous homage to the band of sunny California, being a fan since the very beginning. One year later I was shocked to hear about the tragedy of a fire during a Great White concert, with all fatal results to follow. One does not read anything about that in the biography and I do understand: Great White is an integer band who always did their own thing (solid rock with a proper blues injection) averse to any kind of trends, giving the fans a positive vibe. That’s the way it’s gonna stay… (Led Zeppelin song – and not casual).
So I am truly delighted to learn that they come up with new material now. The ball started rolling again after a benefit concert of Great White in January 2007. Eight years after their latest studio album (‘Can’t Get There From Here’) the original members started to write new songs and realised what they had been missing all the time. The result hits the shops right now. ‘Back To The Rhythm’ contains timeless blues hard rock without being old fashioned. During feeling-good rock songs like ‘Back To The Rhythm’ (AC/DC allied riffs) and ‘Take Me Down’ (Guns ‘n’ Roses) I instantly get a positive feeling showcased by bands such as Gotthard and Krokus too. Without getting too cheesy the band also delivers a bunch of sensitive tracks.
Listen to the marvellous guitar skills of Mark Kendall and Michael Lardie plus the emotional voice of Jack Russell in songs like ‘Play On’ and the compelling ‘How Far Is Heaven?’ Okay, there are some mediocre songs as well. In ‘I’m Alive’ and the sing along track ‘Still Hungry’ they get into a dip, but seen as a whole there are lots of things to enjoy on ‘Back To The Rhythm’. The European bonustrack ’30 Days In The Hole’ reminded me of Free’s ‘Alright Now’, but then I realized that this has to be the perfect illustration of their statement that they reflect their adoration for the Stones’ guitar tandem in their own compositions. Those who knew Great White before; will not be disappointed by this album. On the other hand this is a safe purchase for everyone who loves bluesy hard rock. And you have to admit: a melancholic song about their own career as ‘Just Yesterday’ can be executed by few bands in the right perspective!

In 2002 hield ik met enige nostalgie het live album ‘Thank You’ van Great White in mijn handen en schreef een spontane hommage aan de band uit het zonnige Californië die ik al van in het begin in mijn hart had gedragen. Een jaar later leefde ik mee toen ik de tragedie vernam dat er tijdens een Great White concert brand ontstaan was met alle noodlottige gevolgen vandien. Daar wordt niets over gerept in de biografie en dat begrijp ik: Great White is een integere band die wars van alle trends altijd zijn eigen ding deed (stevige rock met een flinke scheut blues) en de fans een positief gevoel gaf. En zo moet dat blijven… (Led Zeppelin song en niet toevallig).
Ik ben dan ook erg verheugd dat ze nu met nieuw materiaal op de proppen komen. De bal ging terug aan het rollen na een benefietconcert dat Great White in januari 2007 gaf. Acht jaar na het laatste studioalbum (‘Can’t Get There From Here’) begonnen de originele leden terug nieuwe nummers te schrijven en beseften wat ze al die tijd gemist hadden. Het resultaat ligt nu in de winkels. ‘Back To The Rhythm’ bevat tijdloze blues hard rock die me allerminst een belegen gevoel geeft. Bij gezellige rocksongs als ‘Back To The Rhythm’ (AC/DC achtige riffs) en ‘Take Me Down’ (Guns ‘n’ Roses) overvalt me meteen een positief gevoel dat bands als Krokus en Gotthard ook kunnen bewerkstelligen. Zonder te sentimenteel te worden levert de band ook een aantal gevoelige tracks af.
Luister naar het prachtige gitaarwerk van Mark Kendall en Michael Lardie plus de emotionele stem van Jack Russell in nummers als ‘Play On’ en het meeslepende ‘How Far Is Heaven?’. Goed, er zijn ook wel enkele banale songs. Bij ‘I’m Alive’ en de meezinger ‘Still Hungry’ belandt men in een dipje, maar algemeen beschouwd valt er heel wat te genieten op ‘Back To The Rhythm’. De Europese bonus track ’30 Days In The Hole’ deed me aan Free’s ‘Alright Now’ denken, maar dan besef ik ook dat dit een perfecte illustratie is voor de bewering van de band dat gitaristen Kendall en Lardie hun adoratie voor de Stones wilden reflecteren in hun eigen werk. Wie Great White al kende, zal niet teleurgesteld worden door dit album. Anderzijds is dit een veilige aanschaf voor iedereen die van bluesy hard rock houdt. En zeg nu zelf: een weemoedig nummer over de eigen carrière als ‘Just Yesterday’ kunnen er maar weinig brengen in het juiste perspectief!
