RATT: Infestation

Ratt has a long history. In the eighties they were a direct hit – being part of the successful glam and hair rock scene on MTV – and they instantly reached the top with their debut album ‘Out Of The Cellar’ (1984) and the successor ‘Invasion Of Your Privacy’ (1985). Their no-nonsense, sexual provocative arena rock gathered success all over the world. Later the success faded away and the band seemed to be history. Their rock ‘n’ roll life had taken its toll, since bassist Robbin Crosby died in 2002 way too young. Their latest studio album – the band itself looks back on it with mixed feelings – ‘Ratt’ in 1999 appeared to be a swan song. Until now!
Singer Stephen Pearcy is back and together with ex-Quiet Riot guitarist Carlos Cavazo and younger force Robbie Crane on bass, Ratt creeps out of the cellar again. The Californian band left Los Angeles for recordings for the first time, to enter the studio deep in Virginia with producer Michael ‘Elvis’ Baskette. The result is a typical Ratt album: their first two albums in mind they started creating ‘Infestation’. Thus it sounds very familiar, yet it doesn’t bear date in songs like ‘Eat Me Up Alive’ and the single’s choice ‘Best Of Me’. We hear sure-fire guitar skills, fast and furious solos, harmony vocals and lovely choirs, naughty lyrics with a wink… in brief: time to put your worries aside and have a party. By the way, isn’t it called party rock? The obligate ballad ‘Take Me Home’ includes a very nice guitar solo. Now that more and more bands in this genre happen to be active again and even an (over the top) newcomer as Steel Panther gets a chance, Ratt deserves a second life as well.

In de jaren tachtig stonden zij – meeliftend op het succes van de glam- en hair rock bands en MTV – meteen aan de top met hun debuut ‘Out Of The Cellar’ (1984) en opvolger ‘Invasion Of Your Privacy’ (1985). Hun luchtige, uitdagende arenarock genoot succes over heel de wereld. Later taande het succes en de band leek tot het verleden te behoren. Het rock ‘n’ roll leven had zijn tol geëist, want in 2002 overleed bassist Robbin Crosby op veel te jonge leeftijd. Het laatste studioalbum – de band zelf kijkt er met gemengde gevoelens op terug – ‘Ratt’ uit 1999 leek een zwanenzang. Tot nu!
Zanger Stephen Pearcy is terug en samen met ex-Quiet Riot gitarist Carlos Cavazo en jonge kracht Robbie Crane op bas kruipt Ratt terug uit de kelder. Voor ‘Infestation’ verliet de Californische band voor het eerst Los Angeles om ergens diep in Virginia de studio in te duiken met producer Michael ‘Elvis’ Baskette. Het resultaat is een typische Ratt plaat: de eerste twee albums hebben model gestaan en men komt dan ook vertrouwd, maar niet belegen over in songs als ‘Eat Me Up Alive’ en het tot single uitgeroepen ‘Best Of Me’. Er is prima gitaarwerk, vurige solo’s, achtergrondkoortjes, ondeugende teksten met een knipoog… kortom: tijd om de zorgen even aan de kant te zetten en te fuiven. Noemt men dit ook geen party rock? De obligate ballad ‘Take Me Home’ bevat toch wel een mooie gitaarsolo. Nu meerdere bands in dit genre terug actief zijn en zelfs een (over the top) nieuwkomer als Steel Panther een kans maakt, heeft Ratt ook best recht op een tweede leven.
