CRYSTAL VIPER: Defenders of the Magic Circle

Crystal Viper is a heavy metal band from Poland with one of the most peculiar discographies I ever laid my eyes on. I we skip the singles and demo’s, they have only two studio albums. The first CD, “The Curse of the Crystal Viper” was followed by some sort of “best of” compilation, “Sleeping Swords”. (strange after one album). And now their second album, “Metal Nation”, is followed by a live album.
This live album was recorded in Germany on the Manowar’s Magic Circle festival in 2009.
On these live recordings, I’m not really fond of Marta’s voice which is not always on pitch. Her studio recordings sound a lot better. She should certainly leave out the little opera-ish piece during “Legions of Truth”, although that also sounded good on “Metal Nation”. Her voice lies somewhere between a female Geddy Lee and Helloween.
The music is genuine heavy metal, filled with cliché’s all ready to sing along and that’s what this music is all about. Having fun on stage and amongst the audience and they certainly reached their goal. The musicians play very good heavy metal music with some stunning guitar solo’s. The drums are not spectacular, but they are perfect for this kind of music.
“Shadows on the Horizon” could be an Iron Maiden song, but many of their tracks apply for that. It’s not really a surprise, the tracks are from the first two albums. ;-) Except for a few extras. You get two songs from their singles, one preview from the coming album and a Virgin Steele cover. These last four tracks are recorded in the studio.
If you like good heavy metal, you should have a listen to this album, but I go for their studio albums.

Crystal Viper is een heavy metal band uit Polen met één van de vreemdste discografieën die ik ooit onder ogen kreeg. Als we de singles en de demo’s overslaan, dan hebben ze slechts twee studio albums. De eerste CD, “The Curse of Crystal Viper” werd gevolgd door een soort “best of” compilatie met als titel “Sleeping Swords”. (vreemd na één album!) En nu wordt hun tweede album, “Metal Nation” gevolgd door een live album.
De opnames gebeurden tijdens het Magic Circle festival van Manowar in Duitsland in 2009. Op deze live opnames, ben ik niet echt weg van de stem van Marta, die niet altijd de juiste toon te pakken heeft. Haar studio opnames klinken een stuk beter. Ze zou in ieder geval beter het operastukje weglaten tijdens “Legions of Truth”, hoewel ook dat goed klonk op “Metal Nation”. Haar stem ligt ergens tussen een vrouwelijke Geddy Lee en Helloween.
De muziek is pure heavy metal, vol met clichés die geschreven zijn om meegezongen te worden en dat is waar het in deze muziek om gaat: plezier maken op het podium en het publiek amusement bezorgen en dat doel hebben ze in ieder geval bereikt. De muzikanten spelen perfecte heavy metal met enkele verbazingwekkende gitaarsolo’s en het drumwerk is niet spectaculair, maar wel perfect voor deze muziek.
“Shadows on the Horizon” kon van Iron Maiden zijn, (Fear of the Dark?) maar veel van de nummers komen hiervoor in aanmerking. Het is ook geen echte verrassing dat de nummers uit de eerste twee albums komen. ;-) , behalve enkele extra’s. Je krijgt twee nummers van hun mini CD’s, een voorproefje van het nieuwe album en een Virgin Steele cover. Deze laatste vier zijn studio-opnames.
Als je van goede, echte heavy metal houdt, dan moet je deze CD eens beluisteren, maar ik ga toch voor het studiowerk.
