The American band Y&T – originally starting as Yesterday & Today – became a very successful hardrock band with a bluesy touch during the eighties. A ballad like ‘I Believe In You’ is a real classic stunner, but also steady rock songs like ‘Forever’, ‘Rescue Me’ and ‘Mean Streak’ can be seen as eternal highlights in the huge rock patrimony. Later they moved towards a more commercial sound with their hit ‘Summertime Girls’ as result. In 1991 the band was disbanded, but a few years later they started doing occasional gigs again. Original members Dave Meniketti (vocals and guitars) and bassist Phil Kennemore are still present within the band. Y&T always guarantees a show full of classics, but making a new album was always put off. Finally the day has come: the first new work in thirteen years, the successor of ‘Endangered Species’ (1997) is out!
The band remains true to its roots on ‘Facemelter’. The new material is announced in a bombastic way in the opening track ‘Prelude, On With The Show’ and right from the very outset, we can grandly enjoy the magnificent guitar skills of Meniketti. That remains a strong quality of the band, together with the slightly hoarse voice of Y&T’s front man. Sturdy rock songs such as ‘I’m Coming Home’, the mid-paced ‘How Long’ or ‘Shine On’ (with Van Halen tinge) sound fresh and sprightly. In ‘Wild Child’ and ‘If You Want Me’, Meniketti shows loads of emotion in his vocals and ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’ charms with its atmospheric sounds. The whole album gives you a feeling of familiarity, but on the other hand it sounds really inspired. It was about time to insert a few new songs in the live set and every song of ‘Facemelter’ can be considered as a potential live stunner. By taking the time they needed and do not rush anything, Y&T has made a sure-fire album that will surely be in great demand of fans of traditional hardrock. On with the show!

In de jaren tachtig werkte het Amerikaanse Y&T – oorspronkelijk Yesterday & Today – zich op als succesvolle hardrockband met een bluesy sausje. Een ballad als ‘I Believe In You’ is een klassieker, maar ook stevige rocksongs als ‘Forever’, ‘Rescue Me’ en ‘Mean Streak’ mogen tot het grote rockpatrimonium gerekend worden. Later ging men even de commerciëlere toer op met de hit ‘Summertime Girls’ als gevolg. In 1991 ging de band uit elkaar, maar enkele jaren later begon men sporadisch terug op te treden. Originele leden Dave Meniketti (zang en gitaar) en bassist Phil Kennemore zijn nog steeds van de partij. Y&T staat steeds garant voor een show vol klassiekers, maar een nieuw album maken werd steeds voor zich uit geschoven. Nu is het dan eindelijk zover: het eerste nieuw werk in dertien jaar, de opvolger van ‘Endangered Species’ uit 1997!
De band blijft op ‘Facemelter’ trouw aan zijn roots. Het nieuwe materiaal wordt groots aangekondigd in opener ‘Prelude, On With The Show’ en we kunnen al uitgebreid genieten van het prachtige gitaarwerk van Meniketti. Dat blijft een sterke troef van de band, samen met de licht hese stem van Y&T’s boegbeeld. Stevige rocksongs als ‘I’m Coming Home’, het mediumtempo ‘How Long’ of ‘Shine On’ (een snuifje Van Halen) klinken fris en monter. In ‘Wild Child’ en ‘If You Want Me’ toont Meniketti heel wat gevoel in zijn stem en ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’ charmeert door wat atmosferische klanken. Heel het album geeft een vertrouwd gevoel, maar anderzijds klinkt het ook geïnspireerd. Het werd ook wel tijd om enkele nieuwe songs in de live set te brengen en elke track uit ‘Facemelter’ komt daarvoor in aanmerking. Door niet overhaast tewerk te gaan heeft Y&T een prima album gemaakt dat gretig aftrek zal vinden bij fans van traditionele hardrock. On with the show!
