English:

Necronomicon is the famous book about the death, but a few bands are named after it and this is the Canadian Black Death Metal band. Necronomicon certainly isn’t the most productive band I know, because this is their third studio album during their 18 years existence. There’s a gap of six years, since the previous release.
I have to admit, that I am not really a black death metal fan, but I listened to this without any prejudices and used my criteria to judge this latest album.
I always use three criteria to judge a black death metal album. First of all, I want to be able to read the band’s name. I don’t want to spend time deciphering a calligraphic logo. But there’s certainly no problem with Necronomicon’s logo.
The second criterion is that I want to understand what they sing. Often, grunted and screamed voices are incomprehensible, but again the band scores, because I understand Rob’s vocals very well.
And the third condition is that I want to hear an album with enough variation. “The Return of the Witch” certainly isn’t the album with the most variation I know of, but they certainly put in some elements to accomplish that task.
The first two tracks contain a “Therion” choir which fits in very well between all the dead creatures and lift this music to a higher necro-level. They also pay a visit to the town of the dead, “Necropolis” and Rob narrates a little intro with a voice from beyond that borders. A little piano tune creates a dreamy atmosphere, while an organ puts the balance back with some extra bombast.
“The Order of Moon” almost becomes boring when it is saved by the piano in a short middle part.
“Lillith” is a short, quiet, slow instrumental intermission which creates an atmosphere of serenity. It’s a pity, they kept it so short. With some vocals this could have become a brilliant classic. The rest of the tracks are more speedy, with less variation.
Fans of Dimmu Borgir and Behemoth should be pleased to hear this, especially the latter. Necronomicon hasn’t changed me into a black death metal fan, but they certainly opened my mind some more for the style. Morituri te salutant!!
