STIGMA: Concerto For The Undead

Late March 2008, the Italians of Stigma debuted with ‘When Midnight Strikes’. Their forceful death metal with any grind/core influences was a success and in the wake of this debut, they roamed through Europe for numerous gigs. Stigma plays inciting, brutal and modern metal, the kind of metal that is very popular at festivals. They continue the horror theme in the lyrics and it is illustrated in the artwork of Andrea Berton in a comic-strip manner.
You’ll notice that the budget happened to be bigger than for the debut. The four-piece (recently completed with a new second guitarist again) entered the Fear Studios (owned by DGM) to record ‘Concerto For The Undead’, but for the production they could rely on the help of Bring Me The Horizon guitarist Jona Weinhofen. For the mix and mastering they even engaged Scott Atkins (at the moment he is working at the new Cradle Of Filth album). That’s why you are blown away by a chunky production. For the rest it is pretty hard to tell something special about selected songs, because Stigma has just upgraded the sound of the debut. This means screaming vocals with a hardcore tinge of Stefano ‘Vlad’ Ghersi, melodious guitar solos that give me something to hold on to and loads of heavy brutality. The pace is constantly rather high and technical skills are fine. I think there are very much bands of their ilk in the scene these days and in the end it becomes a bit monotonous. Just as on the debut, a few guest singers came along and this time we hear Jon Hunt (Dead To Fall) in ‘Prove You Are A Man’ and ex-The Red Shore guy Jamie Hope in ‘3000 Years And Still Keeping It Real’. When you are a fan of the genre or bands like The Black Dahlia Murder or Himsa, then ‘Concerto For The Undead’ might suit you perfectly. A portion brutal heaviness played as keen as mustard.

Eind maart 2008 brachten de Italianen van Stigma het debuut ‘When Midnight Strikes’ uit. De gebalde death metal met enige grind/core invloeden sloeg live echt aan en zo schuimden zij in het kielzog van dit debuut heel Europa af. Stigma speelt dan ook opzwepende, harde en moderne metal die het vooral op festivals nog erg goed doet. Men vervolgt het horrorthema in de teksten en dit is op een cartooneske wijze geïllustreerd in het artwork van Andrea Berton.
Je merkt dat het budget groter was dan bij het debuut. Het viertal – onlangs terug gecompleteerd met een nieuwe tweede gitarist - trok de Fear Studios van DGM in om ‘Concerto For The Undead’ op te nemen, maar voor de productie werden ze geholpen door Bring Me The Horizon gitarist Jona Weinhofen. Voor de mix en mastering werd zelfs Scott Atkins ingezet (hij werkt momenteel aan het nieuwe Cradle Of Filth album). Je wordt dan ook omver geblazen door een vette productie. Verder valt er weinig in te gaan op afzonderlijke songs, omdat Stigma het geluid van het debuut gewoon verder uitgewerkt heeft. Dit betekent schreeuwerige zang met hardcore tintje van Stefano ‘Vlad’ Ghersi, melodieuze gitaarsolo’s die me houvast geven en flink wat beuk en mepwerk. De snelheid ligt vrij hoog en de technische bagage is dik in orde. Wel vind ik zelf dat er al veel bands met dit geluid zijn en dat het als geheel een tikkeltje eentonig wordt. Net zoals op het debuut, kwamen er enkele gastzangers meebrullen. Deze eer gaat ditmaal naar Jon Hunt (Dead To Fall) in ‘Prove You Are A Man’ en ex-The Red Shore man Jamie Hope in ‘3000 Years And Still Keeping It Real’. Hou je van het genre of van bands als The Black Dahlia Murder en Himsa, dan is ‘Concerto For The Undead’ op maat gemaakt voor jou. Een portie energieke brutaliteit, vol vuur gespeeld.
