After eight studio albums, ‘Live In The USA’ is Primal Fear’s first live album. This German metal machine has often been considered as a ‘Judas Priest rip off’. Ok, vocalist Ralf Scheepers sometimes sings like Rob Halford and already showed his interest to join The Priest, but taking the band for a ‘Judas Priest copy’ would be totally unfair.
Although ‘Live In The USA’ is a career spanning album including almost every hit single the band released so far, the focus of the album lies on the last two studio albums: ‘New Religion’ and ’16.6-Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead’. So this live CD is a kind of ‘best of so far’ album. It is a pity no songs of two of my favourite albums ‘Black Sun’ and ‘Seven Seals’ are included in this live CD. The band is in top condition and confirms their leading role in ‘metal power land’. Primal Fear had a very hectic tour schedule last year and this release is the perfect ‘blue print’ of the fantastic year The Fear had on the road. Scheepers’ high pitch vocals prove he is still one of the best voices in the genre. Also guitarist Alex Beyrodt, replacing band member Magnus Karlsson, delivers great musicianship on this dynamic and powerful album.
The only minor weak point is the poor interaction with the audience. Sometimes you get the impression the band is performing their ‘larger than life’ sound for just a handful of fans in some small venues. ‘Live In The USA’ is available on CD, DVD and in a special edition including both. If you do not yet have any release by these German power heads, this one is the perfect CD to purchase. Fine album by one of the hardest working bands in the genre. Recommended!

Na acht studio albums is ‘Live In The USA’ de eerste live cd van deze Duitse metal machine. Primal Fear wordt vaak, onterecht, afgedaan als een copij van Judas Priest. Akkoord, Ralf Scheepers solliciteerde ooit naar de job als zanger bij The Priest. Met zijn hoog stembereik komt hij erg dicht bij de vocale krachtpatserij van Rob Halford, maar de band beschuldigen een ‘Judas Priest rip off’ te zijn, zoals op sommige fora wordt gedaan, lijkt mij echt van de pot gerukt.
‘Live In The USA’ is een bloemlezing uit de dertienjarige carrière van deze Duitse power metal pioniers. De nadruk ligt wel op de laatste twee albums ‘New Religion’ en ’16.6 Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead’, twee schitterende albums. Verder volgt er een soort ‘best of’ setlist. Alleen is het wel te betreuren dat er totaal geen songs worden gespeeld van ‘Black Sun’ en ‘Seven Seals’. De band klinkt op dit album in topvorm en presenteert bijna dezelfde set als tijdens hun Europese doortocht vorig jaar. Scheepers bewijst nog maar eens dat hij één van de beste stemmen heeft in het genre en gitarist Alex Beyrodt vervangt op een sublieme manier Magnus Karlsson, wat wel vaker gebeurt tijdens optredens van de band.
Klein minpuntje vind ik de interactie met het publiek. De ‘larger than life sound’ van Primal Fear moet het soms stellen met een minuscuul applausje waardoor je de indruk krijgt dat de band optreedt voor twee man en een paardenkop. ‘Live In The USA’ is verkrijgbaar als cd, dvd en special edition met cd en dvd. Wie nog niets in huis heeft van Scheepers en zijn jongens kan dit in één klap goedmaken met de aanschaf van dit live album. Prima live cd van een fijne band. Aanbevolen!
