BLOOD OF KINGU: Sun In The House Of The Scorpion

Ukraine is still wrapped in mystery for most of us, West Europeans, and same goes for the sole bands that break through this haze to our regions. Drudkh is without any doubt the most prominent band of that area and they are rightly considered as echelons of the Ukrainian (black) metal scene. In Blood Of Kingu one can notice four members of Drudkh, Hate Forest, Dark Ages and Lutomysl. Moving spirit Roman Sayenko is one of them and besides guitars and keyboards, he is also responsible for vocals.
The debut ‘De Occulta Philosophia’ came out in 2007 and was a manifest of intense, fast black metal. Harsh and grim. The successor ‘Sun In The House Of The Scorpion’ is mainly filled with stuff of that ilk, but there are regular rhythm changes and the second and third track round off in an atmospheric manner with ethnic percussion in which one can feel the enchantment of endless nature. The philosophy of Blood Of Kingu is ravishing. They aim for the bewitchment of mysteries, waving their enigmatic web around the band. They are mainly inspired by Sumerian, old Egyptian, old Tibetan and Indo-Aryan mythology, demonology and astronomy. All blackened mysterious stuff. Especially the ten minutes long epic ‘Incantation Of He Who Sleeps’ with its bestial growls and weird, indefinable sounds is captivating. I was also curious about the so-called Tibetan chants that the band uses, but ritual chants remain a bit in the back in all this heaviness of the music, except in the Beherit cover ‘Gate Of Nanna’. This song verges more to greasy old school heavy metal and the throat-sounds we hear have a didgeridoo feel. Exotic! This is really a special band and fans of Wolves In The Throne Room and Drudkh will be intrigued by them.

Oekraïne is nog steeds in nevelen gehuld voor de modale West-Europeaan en hetzelfde geldt voor de enkele bands die uit dit land doordringen tot in onze streken. Drudkh is daarvan de meest prominente en met recht worden ze de voorvechters van de Oekraïense (black) metal scène beschouwd. In Blood Of Kingu treffen we vier leden van Drudkh, Hate Forest, Dark Ages en Lutomysl. Ook boegbeeld Roman Sayenko is aanwezig en neemt hier buiten gitaar en toetsen ook de vocalen voor zijn rekening.

Daar wordt de opvolger ‘Sun In The House Of The Scorpion’ ook voornamelijk mee gevuld, maar er zijn wel meerdere tempowisselingen en het tweede en derde nummer eindigen op een atmosferische manier met etnische percussie waarin men de betovering van de eindeloze natuur voelt. Want de filosofie van Blood Of Kingu spreekt me meteen aan. Ze mikken ook op de fascinatie voor het mysterie dat ze als een beschermend web om zich heen weven. Ze zijn namelijk geïnspireerd door Sumerische, oud Egyptische, oud Tibetaanse en Indo-Aryan mythologie, duivelsleer en astronomie. Allemaal zwartgeblakerde mystiek. Vooral het tien minuten epos ‘Incantation Of He Who Sleeps’ met zijn dierlijke growls en vreemde, onbestemde klanken is beklijvend. Ik was ook erg benieuwd naar de zogenaamde Tibetaanse gezangen die men gebruikt, maar rituele chants blijven meestal overwoekerd door de heftigheid van de muziek, behalve in de Beherit cover ‘Gate Of Nanna’. Dit nummer neigt meer naar smerige heavy metal en de keelklanken die geuit worden roepen een didgeridoo gevoel op. Uitheems! Dit is zeker een aparte band die liefhebbers van Wolves In The Throne Room of Drudkh zal intrigeren.
